I’ve been overweight since puberty, age 11. I remember standing in line on the first day of school in the 5th grade and the boys who once had crushes on me were now pointing at my thighs calling me fat. I distinctively remember looking down at my legs, with my dark brown corduroy’s on and thinking…they are rigth. Thus began my weight battle journey.
I think the first diet I ever tried was when I was a freshman in high school. It was Slim Fast. It worked for a while, but then I got sick of the chocolate shakes and gave up. Then I tried Weight Watchers. I remember eating the lasagna frozen meals because they were filling. That worked for a while too. I must have joined and quit weight watchers seriously about 20 times. I would lose anywhere from 5 to 62 pounds. I tried Atkins, Nutri-System, some other supervised program similar to Nutri System (but you cooked your own food), Paleo, Herbalife, weight loss contests with friends and at the gym (yes, I won), but I would always go back to my old habits. Life was a party.
In 2009 I had decided I would give the lap band a try. I wasnt heavy enough and didnt have any co-morbidities (by their standards), so I wrote my insurance company a heart felt letter/plea and it worked! I mean I do have asthma and a really bad knee that is barely hanging on, which I described in my letter. And at the time I was also on anti-depressants. I wasnt sleeping well at night, to the point I was almost falling asleep at the wheel. So I got the approval. YAY! My doctor said he couldnt believe it. But by the time the surgery came near, i had gained probably enough weight to get me pretty close to the necessary bmi anyways. So in December 2009, the lap band went in. I thought it would be the answer to all my dreams. Not so much. The only thing it did for me was get food stuck, give me heartburn, and make me get sick (throw up). I couldnt eat anything. I had a slip (where your stomach comes up and out through the band so they had to take all the fluid out. Sometimes the just take the band out altogether at that point, but not for me. So i lived with my lapband to date. Fast forward to December 2013 and I’m in my primary care physician’s office, she’s asking me how i’m doing, how is my weight and I said “I give up.”
