Hello Sana,

I am a muslim as well and have a lot of family in Turkey (some are Asian and some are European depending on which side of Istanbul you are on). I am living in the US. I don't think there are very many muslims here but now I know now that there are at least 2 :0)

I hope you are doing well. I was just banded in January so our surgeries are not very far apart. I have not shared banding with anyone (other than my husband of course). It has been interesting so far. I am not sure how things will go during Ramadan because fasting will be more difficult when you have special eating restrictions.

Feel free to send me a message at any time. Best of luck.

Welcome snow princess :0)

The first month is rough, but it gets easier very soon thereafter. It is just a time of adjustment and being hungry but not being able to eat much.

I hope you are feeling better about banding very soon.

Hello,

I am so happy you are joining our happy group.

I remember asking the doctor about Ramadan fasting when I first got banded. They said it would be very difficult to get in sufficient liquids with tight restriction if I am only drinking at night (and sleeping for most of that time). However, I was determined that I would give it my all by the time Ramadan arrived.

My first Ramadan banded did not go well at all. I was at my sweet spot with good restriction for many months by that point in time and had lost most of my excess weight.

I was OK for a few days but I started having problems at night. I started having really bad symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn but I think it was from the late dinners . . . sleeping, early Breakfast . . . sleeping.

I was tight enough that in the mornings before Ramadan that I would usually have a shake for Breakfast because it would go down and my band would loosen up during the day. However, this tightness did not really allow me to eat much of anything during Ramadan. So it wasn't long before I would eat mostly Soup at any meal and would pb it a lot of the time. liquids started becoming a problem for me and I got progressively tighter and tighter until I had to have an emergency unfill.

I also conceived a child last Ramadan (I am due in one week :frown:) and that may have contrbuted to the extreme band tightness that came out of nowhere along with other dietary upsets. So perhaps my issues occuring during this time may have been attributable to both pregnancy and fasting but I am not sure how much could be associated with either factor.

I have decided for the future that I will not fast with a tight band. I think I will schedule an unfill every Ramadan to prepare for fasting and top it back off after it is finished.

Wow. I am interested to see what my dr will say. I will let you know how that goes.

Funny that I have seen so many of your posts and keep wanted to comment on your picture and how much I LOVE it... I am glad to know that you are here as well as the other "sistas" so cool thank you!

Hello everyone, My name is Jean and I am an American Muslim. I have been banded for almost one year and lost about 60 lbs. Its been slow at times. I had a hernia operation in Dec. and my hubby was sick and I went off track. I am going to get another fill in 2 weeks. I fasted last Ramadan with no problems. I bought some high Protein Shots I found in Walmart. This year I will have one of them in the morning and eat a lot of Protein to break the fast at night. Always make sure you get up before sun rise as close to the stop eating time as possible.:cursing:

Jean, Hello,

I just got the order of Isopure, I bought the Natural chocolate and vanilla and the isolate (clear) I cracked open the chocolate it was really good even in water!

I have been collecting my "supplies to get ready for for my surgery date.. TBA When is Ramadan this year? I think it is going to be close... and recovery etc... so I don't know. I will have to check the date.

My husband brought home the Protein shots, by body choice, with 25 gr protein... those are nasty taste like a really strong sweet tart. BLAH!

I have never lost weight during Ramadan EVER

Hello everyone, Glad to have a Muslim posting.:) I did very well last Ramadan. I was banded in July and fasting was a month away. My doctor didn't like the idea of fasting but a lot of them don't understand it. You can try fasting and if it doesn't agree with you don't continue. I am going for another fill on the 23rd of this month. I had on but they had to let some out as I could not eat or drink. I drink the Protein called Unjury. It tastes very good. I also take chewable vitamins for Calcium and Multivitamins. I wish you all good luck for fasting this year as the days will be long.

The majority of what we have here for dinner during Ramadan is Soup, (shorba) I was thinking that would just fall right through??? most of it is puree'd. Anyone else? What do you eat during Ramadan?

I am happy to see other Muslims on this site! I am not banded yet, but I will be right after Ramadan. I never thought about fasting with the band. I"ll have almost a year before I have to worry about that, so PLEASE post about Ramadan and its effects with the band, so I can be prepared for next year. BTW, I am going to Dr Ortiz in Mexico, any thoughts? Anyone else wen to Mexico?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
