Post-opt symptoms-fever/hot flashes

Recommended Posts

My husband is 6 days post-op from gastric sleeve surgery. He had the band for about 8 years before it had to be removed because of scar tissue at the entry of his stomach (This was 3 months ago) He is having a hard time explaining what is going on...other than being "uncomfortable," but he has had 3 days of consistent night sweats, day sweats, and on and off low grade fever...based on everything I have read he should be getting back into his regular routine by now. I'm concerned and thought I would reach out to the men who have had this surgery.

Going to Dr. in the morning...food has been the same for the last 13 days...clear liquids, Protein shakes...no new meds, except paid meds which he has not reacted to in the past...I don't believe any new meds were introduced during/after surgery when his band was removed 3 few months ago...i suppose I just was wondering if this is common, but just not "highlighted" when this drastic surgery is touted as a great procedure to have done...

There are always going to be side effects and risks with any surgery. They can't go listing every single possible thing that might happen. 6 days out is a bit early to be in any sort of "regular routine." It takes time to heal from this.

I had an elevated heart rate and minor fever the first two weeks, but I had some complications a few days after surgery. Even when I was back home the feverish feeling and higher heart rate continued. Our doc had us monitor our heart rate and temperature. If either one was over 100 that was when he wanted a phone call so the office was at least aware because it can be a possible sign of infection - possible - not a guarantee that it is. After a few days things leveled out for me and I was back to normal.

Thanks for your reply. It was reassuring. We had an issue initially with a high heart rate. I will post after visiting the Dr. If there is any useful information to share. Thanks again.

Good luck. Hope your husband gets to feeling better and gets an idea of what's going on after the visit.

Checked my husband back into surgery center ER and he was VERY dehydrated due to diarea. Even though he was drinking the recommended Water quantity. They said this could have been very serious and could have been a stomach leak or even pneumonia. Luckily we got to the ER in time and all test a and the CT was good. He was released after 3 units of Fluid. He is still running a 100 degree fever. They said that if it reaches 101 degrees to come back. The only other test to come back tomorrow is a GI viral infection Which will be treated for antibiotics and Probiotics. The moral of the story...everyone is different and these symptoms should not be taken lightly. It's better to get checked out if you have these symptoms then to think it is "normal" after surgery side effects. The other moral of the story is to address these types of issues quickly (especially the first week after surgery) so they do not progress into something more serious and harder to diagnose.

On a final note...do not hesitate to contact the surgery center where you had your procedure if your doctor is unavailable to personally talk with you. They are available 24 hours a day.

Glad to hear you're getting it sorted out. I never had a solid explanation as to why my heart rate & temp stayed elevated the first week at home. I could only assume it was due to the complications I had after my little spleen bleed. Definitely stay on top of his Water intake and keep an accurate measurement of what he's getting in to take out the guesswork. Hope after this he's onto a speedy recovery.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
