When did your head hunger stop?

Recommended Posts

I'm a month & a few days post-op. This week, I'm on the puree phase. Since yesterday I've been craving Diet Coke & McDonald's chicken McNuggets. I know both aren't good for me. I'm not pregnant (of course not, not allowed to be this early) & my menstrual cycle doesn't start for another 2-weeks. I haven't cheated my entire process pre & post-op.

When did your head hunger stop? After almost 8-weeks of surgery dieting, I'm shocked I still have cravings. It comes & goes but I'm hoping since I'm transitioning to soft foods next week that I won't screw up & go back to my old ways.

Height: 5'0"

Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs.

Surgery date: 2/13/17

Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs).

Current weight: 185.2

My profile picture is not me. It's my "FITspiration" body.

I think it's always going to be a battle to an extent, but with time it will get better. I seriously consider this to be similar to recovering from alcoholism. I can beat my food issues, but chances are it's going to be a battle for the rest of my life. Although a lot of food thoughts went away once I was back to eating regular foods I'm finding myself having to push off some old habits wanting to return. For instance as soon as I get home from work I think I need to eat something although I really don't need to. I've also been annoyed this week at doing so much meal prep work. That's all tied in with my scale barely moving in the past two weeks. My head says the hell with it and have a few cheat foods, but I can't do it. Been through too much in this short period of time to give up to old habits.

Can I ask if your plan is special/unique to your situation? The reason I ask is because most people, myself included, start the pureed stage after 2 weeks. Eight weeks seems a hell of a long time to just now be getting there.

I meant 8 weeks altogether. 2-weeks pre-op liquid diet, 4-weeks liquid only post-op, 1 week on week 5 post op puree, & now soft foods week 6 post op tomorrow for 1 week.

After writing this post, I realize I'm so stressed out with work & school. I wonder if it's an emotional issue not related to the sleeve. Before the sleeve food was my comfort for stress. I like your analogy about almost being like a recovering alcoholic, it could be that too. Since the hunger hormone (gherlin) is removed, I thought this would stop.

That's how I can tell it's head hunger. I get home from work and I automatically think "I need to eat." This is something I've always struggled with. I have a long drive home, but regardless I can eat something right before leaving work (and not be hungry at the time) but I get home and think I'm hungry.

I've been more stressed this week and I can tell I'm wanting to go back to old habits. I do believe in time it will get easier as I become more adjusted to the new lifestyle. I quit smoking like 5-6 years ago and I used to think there's no way life could go on without them. It'll be the same with some foods. The temptations will be there, but over time it'll get easier to realize I don't need it and am better off without them.

I am the same as orionburn, I am famished when I get home. This would usually lead to sampling as I cook. I am having a hard time with that and grocery shopping right now.

I tried a sip of Diet Coke, crispy, cold, in a bottle. So refreshing pre-surgery. I tried a sip & I lost the taste for Diet Coke. It tasted gross to me. Luckily my stomach didn't react to the carbonation. I haven't tried a chicken Nugget yet & frankly, don't care anymore about it. I lost 35 lbs since my consultation & that is my motivation. I don't want to ruin it now for head hunger. I still have 40 lbs to go. The results keep me motivated. It's crazy how I lost taste for so many things, including my obsession for coffee. I lost the taste for that too.

I logged on tonight specifically to see if I could find a post about head hunger and boom, here it is. I'm five weeks out and 30 lbs down, but I've stalled the past four days. I've read in numerous posts that stalls and plateaus are not uncommon and may be temporary, so I'm trying to take it in stride and do the best I can. I walk for an hour once or twice a day, but as I transition to regular diet, it seems that the more foods I can eat, the hungrier I get. Ugh! I realize that a lot of my hunger is head hunger, but since I also struggle with anxiety, the temptation to use food as a calming mechanism (like I used to) is so strong! I'm kinda feeling apprehensive about staying on track.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
