I cannot decide if I should do this or not

Recommended Posts

I had those same feelings, even when I was about to go under for anesthesia, I prayed for God to take the lead. I have tried the last 20 years of my 48 year old life to regain what I had lost with being overweight. I did the research, talked it over with my husband, prayed and thought hard about it, and in the end made the right choice for me. I'm 8 days post op, and I'm not feeling that bad. I found this website after surgery which has been a great support to me. I don't feel like I am doing this alone. I feel connected.

You'll make the right decision that is right for you. Best Wishes in whatever your decision is.

I am almost 5 months post op. I have lost 97lbs. I no longer take meds for diabetes, edema, or gout. I don't need my bipap machine and the pain in my knees is no longer a constant issue. The tendinitis in both my elbows has finally resolved, it wasn't healing because I was having to push myself out of a seating position. My ortho says if I continue on this path, I will be able to stop the degeneration of my knees and no longer will need to get both replaced within 10 years. All that and I am only half way to goal. Think about what this kind of change can do for your life.

If your not sure don't do it.

Your surgeon is on crack, if he suggested you get the sleeve with pre-existing GERD.

There are ppl on here that did that and had to revise to bypass. You can ask him and he will rationalize his stupidit.

Research on your own and talk to ppl who had to revise to bypass due to GERD.

Anne tends to be a little excitable. She means well

Gerd does tend to be a good reason to strongly consider a RNY bypass.

Ultimately, this is a huge decision... right up there with family size, occupation choice, spouse selection, etc.

Take your time researching and deciding your course.

One key decision helper is to reflect on the number of times you have attempted weightloss before. Those undergoing surgery have tried their best, multiple times, and couldn't keep it off. They can't face another attempt that is doomed for failure.

If you have a thought that you really didn't try that hard, and are up for another attempt, then by all means, try on your own first. The surgery isn't going anywhere. A couple years won't make that much difference.

Good luck!

LOL @Berry78.

I may have been a bit too frank. Its hard to see folks with pre-existing GERD are recommended the sleve as its truly a gamble. You may be one of thhe few where the GERD is "cured" or among the many where it is worsened significantly, requiring long term meds (woth their own host of potential issues) or revisions to Gastric Bypass. I chatted with a woman on a Facebook group who was suffering from GERD, Barrets Esophagus and Esophageal erosion!!! And yet her surgeon said the sleeve was the best choice for her vs a Nissen fundoplication! Well guess what her GERD got worse much worse. It broke my heart for her. I don't know why he recommended it or the whole story. But I can't imagine how the benefits outweigh the risks.

So, that's that :) All the best.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
