Seminar First / Medicaid Woe

Recommended Posts

Hi, this is my first post.

I have a long history of being overweight but I have gained a lot in the past year or so because I have a lot of issues with my spine (stenosis, degenerating discs) and arthritis in my hip so I can't walk very well or stand. My orthopedic surgeon at Lenox Hill here in NYC has suggested bariatric surgery and has referred me to Dr Mitchell Roslin at the Lenox Hill Bariatric practice.

I called them up and I need to attend their seminar first before I schedule a consultation with Dr Roslin.

I have Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthplus (Medicaid) and I just know they are going to make me diet for 6 months before surgery. The thing is, I can't take 6 months more of pain! I am in pain all the time due to my back and it makes my life hell. Does anyone know if they make some kind of exception due to medical conditions like these?

Glad I found this community. I have been reading a lot of posts and have learned a lot. Thanks for listening.

I haven't heard of an exception as most insurance companies, even private such as mine, require you to be on a medically supervised weight loss plan for months prior to the surgery. Sometimes if you have already given it a shot to lose on your own and that is well documented in your medical records over the last 5 or so years I have heard insurance companies approving pretty quickly. I wish you all the best on your journey!

I can be supervised by a nutritionist, that's fine, but I can't exercise due to my back because it's disabling. If I lose any weight during the supervised diet will I be denied the surgery?

I have had four back surgeries so I can feel your pain! You will lose weight and the doctor will expect you to lose some weight on your own prior to surgery. That actually assists you in getting approved as it shows you are ready to take the plunge and do the lifestyle changes you will need to in order to be successful. Surgery alone does not make you lose weight and keep it off...you have to be able to make the required changes as well in order to be successful so the pre op part of the journey is how you prove yourself to your doctor and insurance co!

Ok thanks so much for your replies. I am really looking forward to the seminar! And I hear Dr Roslin is really great so it looks like I'll be in good hands.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
