Loss of feeling in stomach and legs.

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm two months out from surgery 11/14/16 and last week I was diagnosed with shingles so I was prescribed acyclovir. Within a few days I noticed that I've lost feeling in my stomach and the front part of my legs. Went to the ER and everything checked out fine, so I talked to someone I know who has had the same surgery as I have but is over a year out about losing feeling in her stomach and she said she did and still to this day can't feel anything in her stomach. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not going to lie I'm a little scared but I'm hoping it's either one of the side effects of the medication or just something I'll have to get used to from the surgery.

It happened to me with my first c section. 15 years later and my lower tummy and left thigh are still numb!

Is the numbness just on the skin surface, or deeper...into the muscles, etc? Any other symptoms?

It started out just skin surface but not it's like I can scratch my stomach and feel it but not feel it at the same time if that makes sense? I'm wondering if it's a combination from the shingles and the medication because both have side effects of numbness but I finished my meds 3 days ago and no change. I'm just worried because my legs are numb too

When in doubt, ask the surgeon. Might be he/she clipped a nerve during surgery. The shingles' effects could take a while to resolve completely too.

Hope it gets better soon!

Thank you! I called my Surgeon to let them know and they said that there's no way it's related to the surgery which I'm not sure how much I believe but I have a dr app. Monday so we'll see! I was think that too about the shingles.

Where was your shingles rash? The rash can present anywhere along (and to the side of) the spinal column. Mine wrapped around under a breast.

If yours was low, originating in the tailbone area, then I wouldn't be surprised if it affected your legs.

It's on the right side on my lower back, about the size of half a dollar size. I called and talked to one of the nurse for my doctor and she said it could possibly paresthesia due to the shingles and taking acyclovir and from the fact that a few weeks ago I was taking Bactrin as well for a staff infection( I have had a rough couple of months ) so I'm just going to go Monday to get confirmation hipefully

You have had a rough go of it! Let us know what the doc says.

When I had shingles, I was 6 weeks pregnant and also had Strep. I took the antibiotics for strep, but couldn't take anything for the shingles. Went away on its own after 6 weeks or so.

It's amazing how these things come in clusters!

Well I went to the doctor and had blood drawn to check my B12, thyroid and Iron levels, all came back fine though my Iron was a little low. I'm waiting to hear back from them to see what to do now but I've done some research and found that Anesthesia can linger in the body for a while but it doesn't make sense to be that because it didn't show up until I noticed the shingles popping up, and that's only in one spot. I've called my Bariatric surgeon to inform them of this issue I'm dealing with but they kept insisting that it's no way related to the surgery... which honestly makes me suspicious lol.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
