Question about dismissal from Hospital.

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

Due to the holiday I am having to wait for answers from my hospital choice, but I thought I would ask here first.

Do you have to have someone go with you to the hospital and be there when you get dismissed? Normally when you check out from a hospital someone has to drive you home, however the driver would take me to the airport, I would fly home, and then I would get picked up and driven home. So is taking someone along a necessity? I can use my phone for emotional support during the process. What is your experience, thoughts, opinions, knowledge??

TIA

I'm not sure which surgeon/hospital you're using but almost all of the reputable ones have you stay in a hotel or recovery house for two days after your surgery. They have a driver pick you up from the hospital and drop you off at the hotel and you have another driver that takes you from the hotel to the airport. At BariatricPal TeamMX you also have your own personal Valet at the hospital and hotel for your entire stay.

The one I'm looking at does all of that, but I wasn't sure if I was expected to have say my husband or a friend with me in order to be released from the hospital or if I could check myself out.

Just my experience: I definitely had to have someone with me to be dismissed from the hospital. They took me out in a wheelchair and made sure that someone else picked me up and was driving.

Lots of people do their Mexico surgeries without someone such as a spouse or friend accompanying them. The hospital or program you use will have someone to take care of you whenever it is needed. You are basically shepherded from place to place by local employees.

That's why I was wondering. It seemed like if I'm not driving I shouldn't need anyone with me but thought I'd see if anyone had any idea. Thanks for the response!

I was mainly asking since I won't have to drive at all. I don't have anyone to go with me since my husband will have to stay with our son. Thanks for your input. :)

There is no hospital requirement for an adult to be accompanied to the hospital. U.S. hospitals require an escort upon discharge, however. They also prefer wheeling you to the inside of the front door for your departure. This is not so much because they care about the patient who is leaving as it is about satisfying requirements of their insurance policies. They don't want someone who has been under anesthesia falling on the way out and possibly suing. I know nothing about hospitals in other countries.

I'm also going to Mexico by myself for my surgery, and many others have as well. As mentioned, you are driven everywhere, so having someone with you is not necessary.

I ended up getting a hold of the place I plan to have surgery and they did confirm that I did not need anyone with me at discharge...so YAY!! However, one of my old child hood friends said she may come up to at least be there when I get out to support me. How awesome. Thanks everyone for your insight I total didn't think they would contact me back so fast!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
