After 93 pnds how can I gain healthy weight (muscle)

Recommended Posts

I absolutely agree. When I was at my lowest (normal) weight, I lifted; and didn't concentrate so hard on the Protein without the carbs. So I totally can relate and know it works. Besides, our brains need those healthy carbs coming in. The brain functions off of 80% of carbohydrates we put in to our bodies. I need to find that stat somewhere before someone jumps in saying it's not true.

Lift heavier weights and right after your work out you want to eat a meal of Protein and a simple carbohydrate to help transfer the amino acids in the Protein into the muscle cells. this is the most critical meal of an active person, directly after work outs as this is when your body is in its anabolic state.( within 30 mins)

Thanks for your comment!!

Lift heavy weight. Most women are scared to lift heavy but that's what it takes to build muscle. My wife is a convert and loves weight training now. Squats, deadlifts, rows, bench press. Strong lifts 5x5 is a good place to start. Give it a Google.

I'm a woman and I love lifting heavy. I am doing it now to build more muscle before my surgery. Intermittent fasting also helps. Not sure it works with WLS, but I think I read someone doing IF and weights too.

The only way to build muscle requires the intake of carbohydrates with the Protein. And also try carb cycling. One day higher one day lower. it plays with the insulin levels on your blood and helps promote muscle growth.
thanks !!

FYI its is MUCH MUCH harder for a woman to gain muscle than a man due to the testosterone levels. To gain solid muscle you will really have to work at it as compared to a similar sized man.

Lot of this. Carb cycling throws your body into a guessing game and can help break up plateaus. Do your weights on higher carb days and cardio on lower carb days. If you can't break it up at least save cardio for the end.

My rule of thumb when lifting is that regardless of how many sets you do (3x10, 4x8, etc) you do not want to be able to get all of your reps on the final set. People think if you can't get all your sets you're lifting too much. The idea is to keep at that weight until you can do all those reps. Once you don't feel challenged then go up in the weights (only 5-10# depending on the lift you're doing).

I never am able to get all my reps in--gotta burn baby.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
