Shuffling Stir Crazy

Recommended Posts

I am only 9 days out and I shuffle around my house and at the grocery store with my husband, I have never been the kind of girl to sit still for very long. I have a recumbent bike at home that I'm planning on slowly peddling in the next couple of days just a little bit here and there, I tried to do some good stretches but my stitches are still sore and I don't thing too much bouncing around would be a good idea. Does anyone have any advice?

I know that feeling, I have moments of being 90year old tired, I love walking my dogs but I live on top of a hill that is a pain to hike up, my neighborhood is perfect for walking except for the hill that my house sits on top of. Plus I live in the Seattle area and it has been getting pretty darn cold up here and I'm not a fan of cold right now. Half the time I have to keep reminding myself to slow down, the other half the time I have to remind myself to wake up....lol

Hi Vipervixen,

I moved from Seattle to Issaquah a few months ago. I'm lucky that I'm in a big apartment building with long, carpeted hallways, so that's where I plan to start walking after my surgery.

I haven't had my bypass yet but I've had 3 previous abdominal surgeries so I know how important it is to keep moving every day. After my last surgery I used my Jawbone UP to track my steps. It's nice to have a goal and see yourself working up to more and more steps each day.

The first couple weeks are hard. Takes weeks for the general anesthesia to completely leave your system and your body wants to spend most of it's energy on healing. Walking is the best cure for cabin fever. I remember getting stir crazy too, LOL. My husband or mother-in-law would drive me to a park a few blocks away once a day so I could walk outside.

Good luck and hope you heal quickly! :-)

I use my Apple Watch and I also have the Standland app with it, in the last 4 years I have been threw 4 major abdominal surgeries, I moved into my house last New Year's Eve just 14 days after one of those surgeries, my condo was in a super cute flat complex that was easy to shuffle around in, I did so many miles walking in circles around that complex. Unfortunately my new home is on top of a steep hill that even before surgery was hard to trek up, but I do have an Amazing view of the Olympic mountains. I am not allowed to drive for at least another week to be able to go mall walking every day, and even though my husband is super supportive after a long day at work he is not always wanting to venture out. I know that there are many creative minds here and I know that I'm not the only one in my predicament.

I'm just looking for ideas, and maybe there will be others who are looking for ideas, and if I can think of something I will post it up.

Wow moving right after surgery -- I can't imagine! Sorry I don't have any brilliant ideas. I have sometimes been reduced to walking a path around my living/dining rooms 50-60 times, LOL. My cats like to follow me around when i do that so guess they got some exercise too, LOL

Kudos on your view of the Olympic mountains! I'm a bit jealous although I love our great view of Tiger mountain. :-)

Firstly- Congratulations on your new journey!

I am like you, unable to sit still but please take it easy. Remember you have had major surgery and you need to heal. It takes time. By all means have a walk around but rest aswell. You will be back to it soon enough.

Bestest wishes for you from Aussie Land!

Watch Netflix, a series you have been dying to watch or a movie every afternoon. Go to the library and get some books or books on tape. Watch weight loss surgery YouTube videos. Meet a friend for coffee or tea. Do online holiday shopping. Go to a mall or large antique store and window shop. Start a hobby like knitting or put together a puzzle.

I am almost 5 weeks out and I love being at home, but I don't work outside the home anyway. I walk on the treadmill every day but other than that I don't do much, it is getting cold and we have had a lot of wet days since my surgery.

At first I took a nap every afternoon, now I at least rest a little each day. I must be part sloth, I don't mind it at all. Tomorrow we are decorating for Christmas and I am looking forward to that.

Why can't you drive yet? I was told I could drive after one week as long as I was not on pain meds anymore.

That's odd. I was told I could not drive until cleared by my surgeon, I think it was about 5 weeks. Apparently it takes weeks for the general anesthesia to completely work it's way out of your body and until it does, you could still have random moments of dizziness or excessive sleepiness without warning. Fun fact: Any legal documents signed within a few weeks after general anesthesia are null and void for the same reason as the prohibition against driving/operating machinery.

But if your surgeon said one week....maybe there is a new cutting-edge general anesthesia that has shorter half life? IDK

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
