loop duodenal switch

Recommended Posts

I am having BPD-DS in a month (12/15/16). My surgeon talks about it with me about it. He said it has a great long term success rate.

That's what my surgeon told me as well. He wants to test my metabolism first to see if I can get sleeved, but I have so much to loose I just don't know if sleeve will be the right option

I think you're referring to the SADI-S or SIPS procedure. That's a single loop DS.

The full or traditional DS is known as the Duodenal Switch or BPD/DS.

Possibly, the information paper my Surgeon gave me says that's what it is, but overall I'm not talking about the traditional one.

Sure I know of the single loop DS. Dr. Roslin at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC has been doing it for quite a while. You might want to look him up as he's written extensively about it.

The SIPS/SADI/"Loop DS" is a newer procedure that is hoped to provide results similar to (or at least "close enough" to the traditional BPD/DS, but in a simpler procedure that would be accessible to more surgeons. The traditional DS is a technically challenging procedure such that few surgeons find it worthwhile to develop, and most particularly, maintain the skills to perform it, so it is hoped that more surgeons can offer the simpler procedure, and that the procedure give better results than the current mainstream RNY and VSG.

Time will tell if it works out as proposed, as it is still generally considered to be experimental/investigational without a lot of long term data supporting it. Its only relation to the traditional DS is the use of the sleeve gastrectomy as its restrictive basis, though being fairly new, it is very much on the ascent and shows good promise, unlike some of the older procedures such as the mini bypass or sleeve plication that never gained much traction due to inherent limitations.

No. I am able to have bowel movements. I am not sure what they are from. I called the doctor and they told me the cramps and bloating should go away in the next couple of weeks. I hope so because it feels like I need to have a bowl movement all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
