Do You Take Caffeine after Weight Loss Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I drank a ton of coffee pre op, probably 6-8 cups a day. I work evenings/overnights and am home with a baby during the day so I really needed it to stay awake.

When I started my pre op diet I bought a second coffee maker to make Decaf in the mornings, and everyday added more to my coffee until it was all decaf. I had a few headaches but I'm not sure if it was the caffeine or the liquid diet.

I tried a cup of decaf post op and it tasted like dirt to me. I don't really plan to go back to coffee ever, I'm glad to be free of that addiction!

I never liked soda, before or after. I do like coffee, and I have a 10 ounce mug a day pre and post op, sometimes 2. The only thing my surgeon recommended was to slow down my intake a week before if I'm a heavy coffee drinker, but other than that, I was allowed to have it pre and post op if I wanted it.

The only thing is I drink lighter ground, nothing bold or it does hurt my tummy, though that was true before surgery, because I have Gerd.

It may or may not apply to you, but I found that the type of roast doesn't affect me. Some brands that are most ordinary (Maxwell, e.g., and another used in an office) gave me stomachaches.

@@higher - Uncle Google will provide whatever is available immediately.

I'm well aware of the existence of Google, although I'm not related, thank you. I thought maybe the OP or someone here could elaborate on their experience with caffeine related malabsorption specific to WLS.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
