Anyone with more than 5 years post op?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I

Was

Wondering if you could tell me about your experiences and current results post op more than 5 or so years. I have read studies and heard that the first 2-3 post op go well. If it's after 5 years that the weight seems to creep back. In any case I would like to hear your stories and tips for long term success.

Thank you!

I work with a lady who is 6 years sleeved and still within 5kg of her goal weight. She eats well and enjoys the occasional alcoholic drink but really has a balanced life. She uses Optifast to help get her back on track if she finds herself gaining weight.

after 5 years weight seems to creep back

@@ma08 sorry guys, long post, what else is new - get a glass of water!!!

this year i will be celebrating my 5th year sleeve surgiversary

holy moly - time really does fly

i lost 100s of lbs over the years

bully for me LOL

maintenance is very hard after you've lost weight the "regular way"

i could never keep the weight off - that's why i decided on WLS

maintenance after sleeve (or any other WLS) can be harder for some (me)

restriction is probably/almost non existent by now (for me)

i need to know when to stop eating

main issue - i can't graze - have prob with that at times

i'm not perfect!!! Well actuallly :D

maintenance isn't always easy (in my case)

eating is now mainly mind over matter

i don't measure much anymore - i eat same stuff a lot, so i know portions

I must eat carefully, moderation, drink 64+ oz of Water, eat lots of Protein etc etc etc

butttt, that's how the world is supposed to eat!!!

most "normal" OP don't follow the above - that's why they are heavy, morbidly obese!!!

quantity of obese people is unfortunately a never ending story

Forever and a day...........

I must continue following the above plus more to maintain my weight

everyone in the world should follow rules too

but - i can't take care of the worlds' problems - just mine

walk, talk, chew gum, rub my tummy at the same time!!!

leap tall buildings too!! LOL

could never do these things before !!!

i never realized how sad i was at times, til i found joy

sounds pretty sad :(

that's my story and i'm stickin' to it!!!

did i "kindof" answer your question how life continues after 5 years with sleeve

i am healthy and happy - enjoying life

kathy

congrats to me!!!!

I don't come around much, but I had my surgery in July 2010.

I actually lost more weight in year 5 post op. My sleeve is just as effective now as it was 18 months post op, when it "settled" to my new normal. I'm 5'1" and 118 pounds; I was 242 on surgery day. I'm down 160 or so from my heaviest ever weight.

I still have a ton of restriction. I could gain if I ate like crap, I've put on ten or fifteen pounds in the past. It's easy to take off if I go back to basics, though.

Your sleeve works if you do, and always will. I'm grateful every day.

@@proudgrammy @@CLK You just don't know how much both of your posts calm me. I keep it positive 90% of the time but sometimes I worry that one day, I'll wake up and there will be zero restriction. I actually had a recent nightmare about it lol. I didn't know I worried about it till I had the nightmare so it's back there in the recesses of my mind. Thank you both so much. Both such an inspiration.

@@ma08 Great question. Thanks! ^^

Six years out in March. Up until four months ago I hadn't gained much only between 3-8 lbs. but I gained fifteen lbs had to go back to the basics I lost 17lbs. I'm now Dow to 137. I had been teetering between 135-142 the past five years. And I'm happy with those numbers. You have to remember that the sleeve is a tool. You can definitely gain if you eat junk. Which I was continually doing I love chips sometimes that would be my only meal.

Not a good idea. I still have great restrictions in the evenings I can eat more than in the mornings

2007 - gained most back.- brought bad habits back.

@@bguarneri

sorry about your "temporary" screw up on weight gain :(

you did great before

you know what to do to back on track

follow all the rules you learned

start over with Protein drinks, liquids, large Water intake etc

eat as much Protein as you can

little as possible with deviled carbs

i know you can become the success you used to be

i have my eye on you!!

give OP on the board for help!!

take care

now back to work!!

good luck

kathy

I'm almost 5 years postop. Its been difficult. I began going through a divorce with in 3 months, then my father got sick, then other stuff started happening. I didn't stay focused and began eating bad.....I never made goal and I have since gained another 25 pounds. I am looking now at a revision or mini gastric bypass. If I had it to do all over again, I would have done the bypass first...

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
