I had GERD really bad prior to surgery. It was most likely weight related because I never had the problem until I put on my weight. Now, after surgery, my acid reflux is horrible at night. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and what helped?

It did not happen to me, but I know you should reach out aggressively to your health care team (bariatric surgeon, PCP, etc.) for help in curing this. Letting acid reflux go on without treating it can be dangerous. It *can* be managed and there is no reason you need to live with it.

I have had GERD for years pre op. Mine is much better now. But I use my PPI and a Gaviscon liquid before bed. I am told it forms a sort of barrier between the sleeve contents and the throat. I use it a couple of times between 6 pm and midnight if needed.

For a few days post op, I had really bad reflux (have had GERD for many years resistant to most treatments). My doctor told me one TUMS would be ok to take if needed. BUT check with your surgeon to be sure they are ok with it :)

Which surgery did you have? I specifically chose the rny to avoid the increased probability of acid reflux increase that comes with sleeve. I would call the surgeon for his specific guidelines. My surgeon automatically prescribed an additional Proton Pump Inhibitor (ppi) added to the nexium I was already using for 90 days post op). After that I tapered off the nexium and have had reflux issues yet...I did have lots of gas pressure for about 8 weeks post op which was easily treated with a gasx type otc med. If the reflux is mostly happening at night, maybe not eating for like 2 hours before bed might help a little as well?

Was on Nexium preop for years. Post op they put me on Protonix and I stayed on it. Have had to start using Pepcid more regularly, but it IS effective.

I'd get reflux and heartburn a couple times every week prior to sleeve surgery. My food choices were horrid.

Since my sleeve surgery 11 months ago I've taken actual pills for this (OTC stuff) only twice. chewable antacids have taken care of the mild flair ups that I've had just a handful of other times.

I'm grateful for this and glad that I can still enjoy spicy stuff....maybe even more often now.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
