Chewing Gum Sugar Free of course

Recommended Posts

How long until you can have chewing gum or use straws again? Is that forever? I want a piece of gum so bad at this moment. 7 weeks post op DS procedure 8/15/16.

SF gum is okay by my surgeon (with the caveat that you don't swallow it, of course). I am at 6 weeks, and I have been having it after most meals (in lieu of washing down with fluids) since I have been on solids.

Check with your surgeon/nut if you're worried, but this is one of those rules that many say is based on myth.

I couldn't have gum until two months out, check with your bariatric team.

Hang in there.

Have chewed gum and used a straw since day 1. Well the straw at least, gum shortly after. My surgeon did not have a problem with either. He did warn against swallowing the gum though.

I don't use straws but I chew sf gum, esp when I feel head hunger, as they call it. I am less than 4 weeks post op.

My surgeon told me it was fine but be super careful not to swallow it as it could cause serious issues.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
