Has anybody had problems with their gallbladder after the sleeve

Recommended Posts

Yes I did. The doc said it was all in my head. Actually it was all in my gallbladder. I suffered for months before he did anything and that was only because he got forced to.

I have not had my sleeve yet but I had my gallbladder out many years ago. At the time I was doing Weight Watchers and had lost a measly 40 pounds. It was pretty painful, I was happy to have it removed.

Gallbladder issues can happen after any weight loss, it isn't just because of the surgery.

Some doctors will take the gallbladder out during WLS but most will not, it is not a problem that everyone has so they don't see the need.

Many people on here have reported going back and having their gallbladder removed after WLS.

A COUPLE of people on here have said their doctors have given them medication to protect their gallbladder after WLS. I have never heard if such a thing before though????

Gallbladder issues/stones are fairly common after weight loss. I can't believe they didn't take your complaints seriously :(

No - it can be an annoyance but it's not anything that would make me reconsider surgery. You could still have gallbladder problems without surgery and removal could be more complicated if obese. I had my gallbladder removed years ago as an emergency but if I hadn't - I wouldn't even consider this as an issue. There's far more complications associated with obesity that concern me alot more.

Yes, my surgeon prescribes this medication. Her protocol is to start the medication about a month post-op and continue for six months.

It's called Actigall (the generic name is ursodiol).

My surgeon put me on Actigal for 6 most post-op to avoid gallstones. I had an ultrasound of my GB prior to surgery just to be sure I didn't already have a problem brewing. This is standard procedure.

They did that with any one having an issue after surgery. That way they could blame you for problems and legally be ok.

Get the drift?

I had my gallbladder removed 4 years ago so I guess that's a good thing!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
