60-65% of Excess Weight?

Recommended Posts

I'm reading that the average weight loss for VSG is 60-65%. Although I have seen 80% also, but mostly 60-65%. Does anyone know if this is the amount from the date of surgery or if it includes the preop diet weight loss also?

Not every program includes a preop diet, so in order for the statistics to be meaningful, they would have to be taken from the date of surgery, not before.

My surgeon uses your very first weigh in from your consultation since they expect you to start losing during your six month medically supervised weight management process prior to surgery. Using myself as an example, I weighed 242 the day of my consult and my surgeon put my excess body weight at 123 lbs.

The 60%, is 60% of your excess weight within 2 years. Taking your start weight and height, you would expect to lose 98 pounds within 2 years and end up at 192.

Your surgery date is not filled in so I am not sure if you are pre or post-op.

I met/exceed the 60% in the first 12 months, and hope to lose the rest over the next 6-12 months.

Remember this is an average - it's very possible to lose more (following the plan) - just as it is to lose less (usually if you don't follow the plan). I am moving forward with the intention of losing more than the average. :-)

I am post surgery. 5 months out. Interesting to see different replies from different surgeons. I know there are many factors involved. Average at 2 years, or even 3 would still be awesome!

They told me I would be expected to lose only 80 pounds.... Well... that's just a statistic... you are a person not a number... you can do as much as you want with this surgery... it's not easy... its hard work... weighing all your food... eating meat gets boring... but it will work for you as hard as you work it....

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
