Antidepressants post op?

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone - I'm one year 3 months post op, and I've probably had depression most of my life. I've never tried any medication to deal with my depression, just "suffered through it" most of my life. I decided recently that enough is enough and informed my PCP that I wanted to try meds. She prescribed Prozac. Anyone have any experiences post-op dealing with Prozac or any other antidepressants? I know most people are looking to come off meds after bariatric surgery - not go ON them.

Oh no we don't want to get off our depression/anxiety pills lol I'll never give up my lexapro. But the pills have different effects on each person. A family member of mine does really good on Prozac, while I didn't. Good for you to go to the doctor and try medicine out, once you find the right one it makes a world of difference.... Good luck:)

Im on Cymbalta which is great also for fibromyalgia, and depression. I dont think i could go on without it. Ive had some serious depression once i became disabled from a fall on the job. 18yrs of being a flight attendant and 1 day of bad turbulence which i hit the top of the plane because i was up and broke my back. Depression isnt anything to play with but once you get on the right medicine, you should start feeling much better

I'm on Wellbutrin, I don't take the extended release but the pills are about the size of an M and M, so I split them before taking. No problems.

I started taking them today. I know it takes a few weeks for the medication to kick in, so here's to patience. :)

I didn't have surgery yet. My happy pill lexpro works well for my depression. I will not go off my meds.

You may notice a difference right away. I've been treated for depression since my early twenties. Pay attention to what you feel and how you. Oh and a piece of advice. Take your happy pill in the evening. It may make you sleepy.

I've been on them for a few months now. The difference in my mood and anxiety is amazing.

I've been on prosteq for my depression for several years, I pray that after my surgery next month I could stop them.

I have been on Prozac for a long time (25 years), ever since Hashimoto's disease decided to pop into my life. I was told that my serotonin level was very low and thats why I needed it and I haven't had an issue at all with it.

I didn't take it for a few weeks because I didn't want to take pills just after surgery but then started after week six if I recall right.

I'm on Citalopram and my God has my depression been worse since surgery. I'm assuming this is because of all the hormone changes. I'll be post op 6 weeks tomorrow and almost 50lbs lost. 2lbs to go. See my doctor on Friday to try to help with that and sleep. My sleeping is terrible!!

Soo good to hear that you are doing so well now! Congratulations!

I had depressions on and off for years.

I was antidepressant free, both pre op and post op, till month 5 post op.

I had a tremendous amount of stress, and one day I just couldn't cope anymore.

I went back to Effexor, as I tolerate it well and it does not increase my appetite.

It took me 8 weeks to start feeling better, as opposed to 1-2 weeks pre WLS, but the main thing is that it is working.

So happy to hear that you are feeling so much better!

Best Wishes!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
