Band to Sleeve Revision

Recommended Posts

I just had band to sleeve revision surgery on August 17th 2016 after 4 yrs with the lapband. I would just like so e advice and what to expect. Weight loss with the band was very slow. From what I've heard, the sleeve surgery you drop weight a lot quicker. Just want to get so e ideas and share my story.

From what I've seen in BP and heard at support groups, people who go from band to sleeve generally lose at a slower rate than those who chose sleeve at the outset.

More important than "what to expect" is to keep expectations reasonable. That may mean that losing weight meets expectations or that one or two pounds per week is on target. As long as you're losing weight, you're ahead of the game. I don't know whether your rate of loss with the band was indeed "very slow" or how much you lost in what period; it's irrelevant now, as you're no longer working the band. If I'm correct in surmising that you switched to sleeve only because you were dissatisfied with your progress, I can only suggest that you consider new ways to think about the entire process.

Can you live with "I'm losing weight?" If you can get yourself to that place, you'll be much happier than you seem.

In any case, all the best from here on.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am so very nervous about going under. I have had my band for about 8 years and now I am going over to the sleeve. Any feedback on how you felt after ? how long were you in surgery and who performed your surgery? Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I was having a lot of pain and indigestion from the lap band so I was happy to have it removed. I don't have the pain I was having since they removed the band. I experienced more swelling and inflammation because of the band. Recovery time is taking a little longer than originally expected. I'm on liquid stage 2 and 10 days post op. I don't have much energy but pain is minimal at this point. I don't sleep at night either but that's ok because I'm home all day resting anyway. I'm ready for a real meal but being patient and listening to my body. I feel this was the best decision I could have made.

I am loving my sleeve! The band was just vomiting, starving, reflux and pain. I just love the sleeve; no reflux, no vomiting, no pains. I can EAT real food, just smaller portions, and I have lost 33 pounds so far. I want to get at least another 45 pounds off, but I know that it might take a while. I had my sleeve in mid July, so I hope that by January I have shed most of it!

Hello! I had Lapband in Dec 2009. HW 250? Got down to 199 at lowest.. Like many, I had success at first but then the complications set in. In April 2015 I had the revision to sleeve, primarily to just get the band out of me and not re-gain a bunch of weight. On revision surgery day I weighed 211 pounds. By October 2015 (6 months) I weighed 169 and felt GREAT... my lowest adult weight ever. I wanted to lose 25-30 more (I am 5'3"). Over the past year the weight has slowly crept back.... I weigh 189 today. I am going back to the basics.... Protein, Water and walking. My roommate and I had the sleeve on the same date. She had never had a weight loss surgery. We were the same height and she was about 10lbs heavier than me. She weighs 145 and looks amazing. We cook and eat the same things.... she is constantly snacking. I definitely think the second time around our bodies are holding tighter to the fat!! Best wishes. Just stay positive. At the end of the day, I am happy with my weight loss.... maintaining is hard and I live in fear of regaining to 250. I will be watching to see your success!!

I got the lap band in 2009, and was successful in that I lost 129 lbs with it within the 18 mo. time frame and kept the majority of it off for many years. In April of this year, I felt I better go in and get a check-up to make sure everything is in order because I felt like I was hungry more often.

The new doctor felt it was time for me to do a sleeve revision, told me that I have a dilated pouch. I had that once before years ago, and had to go 3 months with only half my Fluid to let my esophagus "rest". I dreaded to be unfilled again because I always gained some weight back, and I had to work twice as hard to get it off again. I couldn't talk them into not unfilling me hehe, so I said I'll go for the revision.

I had my revision on Sept. 2, 2016, and am thrilled at the way I feel. No slimming, no painful pressure in the center of my chest... All those things one gets used to having the band all those years. I love it, and although I'm hungry during the liquid phase, it's not that bad at all. Lost 11 lbs in the last couple of weeks but I am prepared for the slower pace. As long as I'm losing, I'm happy with that.

Good luck all, and hope you are as happy (or will be as happy) as I am with my new sleeve.

That's great!! At least you were losing with the band. I was slowly gaining but that was after an up fill for 8 months before I had the revision. I am three weeks post op and I can already tell that it's way better!!

I just feel like maybe I am.in a worse situation . I mean I deal with an anxiety disorder and with the band I wasn't worried or fearful I lived my life normally. With the sleeve I'm scared to eat normal. I have always had issues with food my whole life. I just feel like when I see people they are so happy and my Dr's made it seem like it was the best thing since apple pie. I havent had any complication (knock on wood) but it's scary to me. I feel like i cant even take my capsules medication for my anxiety because something might go wrong. I wish people would have explained the process the emotions and the aftermath. Sometimes I feel alone with all this because no one knows I had it done except a couple people.

:( *hugs* Change is often scary, and since I have issues with food as well, I can understand that. For me, food has always been my comforter. I still go to online OA meetings from time to time to find emotional support since I haven't told anyone about my surgeries either. I've thought of seeing a therapist just to make sure I maintain my inner peace, but although I've been carrying the name around since surgery, I haven't called yet. Mainly cause sometimes it can be expensive, depending upon my insurance. I did watch a neat video the other day where a Dr. did a quick video on how the Sleeve is the most natural of all WLS, and it was calming. If you'd like me to post it, let me know.

Either way, we're here for you too.

Thank you. I havent seen any videos like that and like I said my dr made it seem like u will be normal just everything is in small portion. I have some regrets and have decided to see a therapist I am on an emotional Rollercoaster. I cry I'm frustrated and I am still trying to enjoy life. I know people say the hardest is day one through 6 months but at this point I'm not sure what to think. I am not trying to be a debbie downer or anything like that because I am usually pretty peppy and out going but lately I'm just .

Nah, not a debbie downer, I see a lot of people like that here and you're just going through real emotions, which is totally normal. I'm glad you're going to see a therapist. I'm still debating but I know in my younger days, it helped me learn some good coping skills. Here is the link to that video. It may be boring or you already know all this but some reason I really enjoyed it. I loved his gastric sleeve book too. I just read that recently.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
