Getting VSG in August at the age of 54

Recommended Posts

I am 55 and had my surgery on May 31, 2016. Just over 5 weeks ago. Only problem I had was bowel impaction after 12 days. I was told not to worry since no much food was going in but, I should have been taking the stool softners 3x day. I all goo now. Still healing. Had an appointment today. All is going well.

I'm 52 and a cancer survivor as well ~ I figure if I keep waiting, I'll only be an older fat woman. Rather be a skinnier, healthier 53 :)

What kind of cancer did you have? Mine was cervical and so I'm worried about them cutting into my gut because I think my surgeon move some things around. I think he tacked up one of my ovaries. I just don't want to have more complications because of the surgery.

I had leukemia - just celebrated 5 yrs in remission in April!! Still have 5 yrs of testing until I'm considered "clear", but so far so good.

I think as long as the surgeon is aware of your history, you'll be just fine. :) I'm sure they encounter all kinds of issues and have ways of working around them.

I'm 61, a breast cancer survivor (14 yrs), had a hysterectomy at age 29, an intestinal tumor removed 10 yrs ago, and had RNY a month ago. I thought long and hard about undergoing yet another surgery but I am glad that I did. After surgery I was able to stop taking diabetes medication and should be off hypertension meds soon.

I have seen the toll that diabetes takes on ones body and really felt that I needed to do something to improve my chances at a healthier life. Glad I did!

I had VSG surgery at age 68. I started at 235 pounds, lost 100 pounds, and have been maintaining at or below goal for the last 14 months. I weigh 135. I'm 70 years old.

And my life is amazing. :) :) :)

I was 58 when I had my sleeve done in March 2016.

No issues, recovery was fine, just some acid reflux and my ongoing thyroid challenges.

I look in the mirror now, and seriously this op made me look so much younger! Like someone in their mid forties :)

Very happy with my results.

It is never too late!

Hi my name is Claire I'm 55 years old I'm having my sleeve done August 25th I have to go to Mexico because my insurance company denied me after 6 months of hard work they denied me one week before my surgery was supposed to take place that would have been July 28th. Needless to say I was devastated staying in bed for a week. Much better now so off to Mexico I go. Thanks for taking the time to listen God bless.

I was 58 when I had my surgery last November. I had absolutely no problems and still don't. But- I did go on a preop diet for 9 months and had already lost 65 pounds by the time of surgery. I also had started exercising so I think my body was in a good place to heal and get on with life! I feel better now at this age than I did in the last 20 years. Good luck!

So glad tl here that. Im 57 and worried, about age,and healing. Thanks

I had surgery three months ago at age fifty three. Other than getting tired very quickly the first month, I haven't had any problems. I am very happy with this tool and this journey! Good luck and good health!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
