A warning to post sleevers...be on the lookout

Recommended Posts

I wanted to give everyone a heads up on this so they don't suffer the same horrendous issues I had for so long. It started about 3 mo post OP, I would get a really nagging pain in my back under the shoulder blade.. It would not go away, even with pain pills and muscle relaxers that I later tried. Then I would get the most bizarre crippling pain right under my ribs (about once every 2 mo or so) felt like my whole diaphragm was contracting and crushing. It was unlike any pain I've ever had. It would start suddenly and sometimes last for hours, and then leave suddenly. ER ct scans showed nothing. Dr thought it was heartburn/stomach contractions, and gave me a regime to follow next time it came on (milk, antacids..etc). Didn't work. Dr prescribed a hida scan to check gallbladder. Very expensive and time consuming scan. Nothing showed up, no stones no nothing. Functioning and emptying was on the low side, so I elected to just get it removed. Guess what?! Full of tiny stones! This was THE cause of my 2+ yr battle. If this happens to any of you, please be persistent about your health, this issue won't go away. Oh.. And get an ultrasound..I should of, but they never did one. And lastly, don't always trust those stupid medical tests.

That is SO WEIRD that you never had an ultrasound for two years! That's exactly what should have been ordered for you.

That's the first thing my bariatric surgeon's nurse told me to do when I called the office 10 days post-WLS reporting the same symptoms you had. It was the first time I'd ever had them.

She told me to go to the ER immediately and get an ultrasound. And yes, there they were -- 30 little stones winking up at me.

Had my GB taken out 2 weeks later by my bariatric surgeon.

No problems at all in the nearly 2 years since then.

I'm an ER nurse and when I read shoulder blade pain I already knew it was a gall bladder issue, I'm very surprised that you isn't have an ultrasound! I'm sure y'all know rapid weight loss causes gall stones, and that pain in shoulder blade and diaphragm is a classic sign. Glad you're doing better!

Yeah, they went right for the CT scan instead, maybe they don't make money on ultrasounds anymore!

I had the HIDA scan. My Gallbladder was performing at 16% when it should be around 35% or more.

I had it removed. Now I think I may be eating some crappy food because I feel pain like it's their again. My lover telling me to knock it off

I had the same thing, but it would hurt so bad when I was on the treadmill, my sleeve dr wouldn't listen so I went to family dr and they ordered a ultrasound and found one huge stone and tons of little ones-I was 6 months out from sleeve surgery and had it removed.

I had my gallbladder out over a year ago. I am preop still. Funny story thought first time I went to the ER they told me my bra was too tight and the underwire was hurting me lol.

I have not had the sleeve surgery yet but I did have gallbladder surgery in 2011. This is true it's like no pain I ever felt & i have 2 kids. It took me 5 ER visits until the fed up emergency Doctor did the ultrasound himself because the techs could not see the stones. They thought I was crazy since I Web Md & diagnosed myself but I was right sometimes you have to go with your gut.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
