OBGYNs reaction to my weight loss..

Recommended Posts

Ok.. A little background

During my first unplanned, later in life pregnancy (I was about to turn 40, back in 2013) this particular nurse practitioner suggested that I terminate the pregnancy. I was floored. I'm am a married woman in a stable relationship and this suggestion was way out of line. Unfortunately this pregnancy did not turn out good and we lost the baby.

I should've run then but I didn't.

In 2014 I found myself expecting again.. Shocker because I have PCOS and in the 20 years of marriage at the time I had only ovulated a couple of times. We never used protection. Which wasn't our best plan, I know.. I was getting excited, we made it past the first few weeks. But Sadly this also did not turn out well and we lost another baby.

At my follow up appointment this same nurse practitioner was rude yet again..in her manner of suggesting permanent birth control do to my weight and age.

I love my doctor..she is wonderful, her beside manner was the best during my difficult trials. Id hate to leave the practice but today was just another dig.

It's been a few years since I've been to the Drs. Since my last miscarriage. So I didn't think much about who I saw. That is until she walked into the room and all these emotions came flooding back. Of course you have to update your medical records. This included my surgery. She saw the scars during my exam so there wasn't any hiding it. It was her comments about my weight loss that really ticked me off today.

"So you're BMI is coming down. That's good but you have more to go".

I'm not looking for a pat on the back from medical professionals but I've lost almost 60 freaking pounds since I last saw her and my more to go is 25 lbs.

If I stay I'm definitely requesting to see my Dr and not this Nurse practitioner.

You need to write this out and send it to your doctor via email and snail mail. She needs to know. I am sure you are not the only patient who is feeling alienated.

What a b!!ch.

Make an appointment with the MD that you prefer. Talk face to face with her. That way, your concerns will have to be documented. Anything sent in the mail may "get lost" and/or "never received".

It's always best to discuss any concerns you have with a patient to Md conference.

You will fee better and your MD needs to hear your concerns.

Good luck!

Prayers going up for you.

@@cindyw41 What a bitch!!! Definitely complain! I work in Medical Adminstration and usually the only way we find out there's an issue is when someone complains. We aren't in the exam room to know how patients are being treated. Many places will have patient satisfaction survey too - fill one out!

I feel your not the first person she has spoken to in that manner... I'm sure someone has brought it to the doctor's attention... If she is still there looks like the doctor condones her behavior.... We all deserve to be treated with respect especially in medical situations regardless of what number you BMI is

Thank you guys. I really should've said something back then but my emotions were on a roller coaster as it was. This time I have a clearer thought process and it truly is unacceptable for her to act like this.

I would have asked her why she never became a REAL doctor. And stated that I would prefer to see a real doctor.

I wasn't fond of the nurse practitioner at my last ob/gyn either. All playing doctor know it all and such. Bleh on them. :P

I freaking ABHOR running into these kind of professionals. How rude. They are probably miserable in their lives and can't stand to spread joy because they are so deep in misery, they don't see it. So sad they are allowed to be in that profession.

I've had a few doozies in my life where medical personnel are concerned. I would have told her how rude and uncompassionate her behavior was, and how hurtful and non-encouraging it was too. This person takes being coldhearted to a new level. What a B**tch, with a Capital B!

You are doing great. Don't let anyone take your sparkle from you!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
