Few questions/ Surgery May 26th.. Yay!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am counting down the days to a new me on May 26th!

I wasn't nervous until anesthesia told me I may wake up from surgery with a bad sore throat and unable to speak for a few hours because of the 2 tubes they put in your throat, the first to intubate and the second the camera to blow up your stomach with air to check for leaks before recovery.. did anyone wake up with a severe sore throat?

Second, I have been shopping for high Protein and low calorie foods. For continued success after surgery and the healing process do you recommend any tasty high protein/low cal foods to help take the weight off and fill you up?

Does anyone have advice or recipes to make it through the puréed food stage, it just sounds gross to me I am awful with textures?

Lastly, my biggest fear is taking 3/4 of my excess weight off and either stop loosing or starting to gain again, any pointers to get to the goal weight?

Thank you very much!

I didn't puree anything. I just ate the scrambled egg and cottage cheese. I got nectar Syntrax unflavored Protein powder and mixed it in sugar free pudding mix with skim milk. That was yummy. I also put it in broths and Soups. It makes it creamy and is easy on your tummy. Then, of course, there are all the Protein shakes. My doctor wanted me off these after week 4 but each doctor is different.

You can lose as much weight as you want. If you look at this site you will see that so many folks are at or below their goal weight. If you concentrate on your Protein and then veggies, you can keep healthy and keep losing. Most who have regained weight will probably tell you that they stopped working the program. This is a tool- ultimately losing weight is totally in each of our hands. We are responsible for what we eat and our own exercise. You can do it!

@@EmilyJune You will have a sore throat - which happens anytime you have general anesthesia. I don't remember not being able to speak for a few hours though (haven't had WLS yet though - only other operations). Pain medications should help with your sore throat and once you are able to have some Water or chew ice chips - that'll help as well. I don't think it will still hurt once you are home but you can get throat spray if it does (or liquid tylenol - as long as you are allowed to take that).

Good luck with your journey!!!

I had no problem at all with surgery. No sore throat at all and not really any pain after surgery. My problem occurred three years after gastric sleeve. I started to use food for comfort after some changes in my life and now have regained a lot of my weight back. Not the fault of the procedure. My fault. Using food as a crutch for dealing with stress.

Had sleeve surgery on 5/13 and I did not have a sore throat and was able to speak. I woke up in pain but it was gas pain in my chest and shoulders. I was able to administer my own pain med so I immediately did and feel asleep. Best advice I can give you is walk as soon as you can. I walked 3hr after surgery to go to the bathroom. As far as eating after surgery- I'm on Premier Protein shakes, broth (warmth feels amazing), sugar free Jello and sugar free pudding.

Once home I was hacking up mucus - not much but apparently normal which I was not aware of - so just sharing just incase the same happens and you don't get concern as I did.

Best of luck!

I did not have a sore throat or any real pain after surgery. Everyone has a different experience so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that your taste may change. My biggest regret was that I brought so much Protein Shakes and Soups before having surgery and did not use any of it because I couldn't tolerate it. It's great to be prepared but see if you can get "sample" sizes of things before stocking up. It becomes wasteful and expensive.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
