Drinking after gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

I am 14 years out from my gastric bypass and have started drinking and now I think I am replacing one bad habit with another. Can anyone help me?

There are many on this site who can give you better advice on your post than I.

I just want you to know that I read your post. I am listening. Sometimes, I hope it helps to know that there's someone "out there" who is willing to just listening.

I know you will find a way over this "bump in the road" on you WLS journey. I realize that it's a huge bump, but with enough support and determination I am confident that you will succeed.

Best wishes and prayers going up for you, my friend.

I would urge you to seek professional help sooner rather than later -- and if you can find a therapist who also works with bariatric patients that would be a great resource for you.

Very best wishes to you. And welcome to the board. :)

Drinking may or may not be a serious problem. How much do you drink, how often do you drink, what situations cause you to want to drink, what makes you stop?

Well I married a man that drinks every day and I don't think I realized that in the beginning...or maybe love is blind. Now I want to drink several times a week. This is not like me at all.I do feel that I need help, but don't want that out in the medical field since I am in the medical field.I know that sounds like an excuse...maybe it is,?????

Surely, you know about HIPAA? Any therapist you see is bound by HIPAA rules.

Find something to replace drinking with. Knitting, crochet, cross stitch, competitive bubble gum blowing, whatever.

See if you can find a therapist in a Bariatric Program. There wouldn't be any way for someone to know you were there because of alcohol. I understand your concern being in the medical field - you seem to know someone wherever you go. For your health and well-being, don't let embarrassment, shame or fear stop you from getting help! Good luck!

Try finding an AA meeting in your area.

It is SO COMMON for WLS folks to turn to alcohol. You are not alone.

Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and/or even Overeater's Anonymous would be worth exploring.

Definitely get help. I to work in the medical field and I had a coworker that had RNY and shr ended up becoming an alcoholic. She ended up losing her Xray license. Definitely not something to mess around with.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
