Started the journey

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. My name is william or you can call me KOOLAID.

So I've begun my journey toward the gastric bypass.

I'm excited, but I have to admit, I've become more aware of my weight problem. Part of me feels discouraged at big I am. 430 lbs. however the other part of me anticipates this change in my life.

What if any have you all felt prior to and after surgery?

What I felt prior To surgery?

Doubt. Doubt it'd work, doubt I could do it. Fear I'd end up with me complications coming out THEN I had prior to. I didn't have many co morbidities, but was keenly aware I was on the fast path to developing many.

What I feel after surgery?

Often, Pride. Pride in the good choices I make, whether it be did our exercise. Fear to a lesser degree, fear that I won't reach my goal, or will let life's complications derail me. Relieved that so many things are easier now, like shopping, or walking a flight of stairs.

There are lots of feelings at play, deal with them all and sort through them, don't let them consume you.

Prior to surgery, many unwelcome medical issues were showing their ugly head because of my obesity. That was the major reason why I had the surgery. I am 33 months post-op RNY. Almost immediately after surgery many of these conditions went into remission and stayed there. So I consider the surgery to be one of the best decisions I ever made. There are tradeoffs in life and in this case I had to trade my deep love for food for good health.

Prior to surgery I felt like my weight was holding me back from so much. I didn't like the body I had created and the problems it was causing. I had HTN, Type II Diabetes, elevated cholesterol. In addition this was driving my anxiety even higher with the constant thoughts of what I was doing to myself. My breaking point was the day I was trying to play outside with my daughter. I was winded after just one round of "catch me daddy!" That was it....no more. I looked it as if I was being selfish in NOT having the surgery, and not doing everything possible to be the father she deserved me to be.

My HTN has resolved, my A1C is dropping, and I'm amazed at the increase in energy I have already in just 2 mos post op.

Hats off to you for making this decision. Best of luck in your journey!

Thank you my friend. It's weird to me. Ever since I've begun this journey I've become very aware of my weight, as before I didn't pay much attention to it. I mean I'm confident but I am tired of all of the weight, and want to be better.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
