Outpatient surgery scheduled for February 26th...need tips!

Recommended Posts

Hello! I'm scheduled for surgery later this month and will be going home shortly after the procedure is done. What will I need at home to help with the recovery process? Will I be okay on my own, or will I need a "babysitter" for the first few days?

Thanks!

i stayed two nights at hospital. i would recommend that someone stay with you at least one night, and take it from there. i felt pretty darn good, but was groggy from morphine. you just have to take it easy the first couple of days.

What do you mean by outpatient? How soon after the procedure will you be discharged?

My surgery is scheduled for 11:30am and I was told that I would be headed home by 3pm. Crazy, I know.

3 1/2 hours and your heading home, I don't think so! Is the sleeve the only surgery you are having? I had 3 different procedures on Jan 26th, was in the operating room 2 hours and in recovery for 3. My surgery started at 1 and by 6:15 I was finally being wheeled to my room. In all that time I only remember being wheeled through the doors of my room. I was in the hospital until Jan 28th and got to leave around 12:30. I had a lot of pain couldn't eat anything but ice chips and did nothing but sleep. I had a TV in the room but it was never on.

I guess it will depend upon your health and how well you recover but 3 1/2 hours doesn't seem long enough to me. I sure hope they don't rush you out the door. Good luck. That is the day I go back to the surgeon for my 1 month follow up.

This worries me. Are you going back the next day for a leak test?

All I wanted to do for the next two days was sleep.

I hope you do have someone in the house to help you for at least a couple of days.

Folks who get their surgery in Mexico fly home in a couple of days, and hundreds have done it, but it takes about that long to get your senses back and get on your feet.

Are you sure you understood correctly? I had an outpatient procedure related to my lapband (removal) and I was still in the hospital most of the day. Got there at 5 am and wasn't on my way home till 6 pm.

I was sleeved on February 9th and my procedure was outpatient as well. It was done at a center of excellence. I checked in at 6 am and was home by 4 pm the same day. Many sleeves are performed as outpatient procedures if you feel the need to stay over night that shouldn't be a problem. They do the leak test and everything the same day. Yes, you will need someone home with you for the first couple of days but the first night I was so drugged that all I did was sleep. Sending positive vibes and healing your way on surgery day- congrats ????

I wasn't even out of the recovery room in the amount of time that they are expecting you to be discharged in! Do you have the option to stay overnight if you are having a hard time controlling your pain or don't feel ready to go home?

I will ask that question during my pre-op class. My surgeon told me overnight stays are only for those who have complications during surgery. We shall see. :)

@@CL~ATL, I was sleeved as an outpatient also. Surgery for sleeve and a hernia repair at 7:30 am and I was home by 1:30. I had my husband with me but I really didn't need him to do anything. I was on pain meds but up and around the house in small doses same day.

I think it all depends on your surgeon, mine was also from a center of excellence. It also depends on you and how fast you tend to bounce back. The pain was truly minimal for me but I am pretty tough.

I am also in Atlanta if you would like to message privately.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
