I am almost at my 10 month bandiversary and fast approaching a year post op and I am sooooo happy with my results!

I have been lucky so far, that the road was pretty smooth, I did have two unfills following two really uncomfortable spouts of vomiting and not being able to eat or even drink at one point but I am back on track now :)

I am down 77 lbs / 35kilos

Gone from bursting out of size 20 trousers to jumping in size 10

Lost 5 inches from my bust

11 inches from my waist

10 inches from my hips

3.5 inches from each arm

7 inches from each leg upper thigh

And I cannot believe it, I would never have guessed I could be here in only 10 months.

Don't get me wrong I have worked really hard to follow exactly what my dietician and nurse tell me to do and I fight the head hunger and temptation and exercise daily but it is so worth it.

I hope this can be motivation to at least one person out there who might be struggling and feeling low right now. When I feel like that I get out there with my iPod and favorite songs and exercise, not to the gym I hate the gym but I go for a walk or jog or walkjog :) as long as I move and I am no sitting on the sofa thinking of food I don't care. I look at an old FAT picture and I think hell no I aint going back there and a few days later a pound or two may have come off. Happy Days!

Looking forward to the next few months and seeing what I can achieve.

I needed this today! Approaching 3 months post op visit. Down 30lbs; but still feel like I am not getting anywhere. I guess I should be grateful. The plateaus tends to make you feel down from time to time.

30 pounds in 3 months post op is amazing! congratulations! I am 16 months post-op and am down 110 pounds. I never believed I would actually lose this much. it's such a HUGE number when you weigh what i did and seems impossible. I knew only 50% reached half their goal (or whatever the stat is, that's the one I remember), and i knew i'd be on the failing side. Then an amazing thing happened -- I kept losing! I was strict with my diet, never bought bad slider foods (until recently) and started to work out the first time in my life. I found cool trainers that got me, really encouraged me and were fun. I started taking spin classes (seriously!) and found that I loved them. I go out sometimes and drink too many calories, but then simply stay off of it for a while. I accept all compliments from others and enjoy them. I've dumped some friends who have tried to sabotage my success and made new ones whose interests align with my new ones.

I'm the thinnest I've been since i remember. I had to have been this thin once, but i have always had such a bad self-body image that i didn't appreciate the great body i had. I'm getting used to the one i have now. I have excess skin i don't want, but i will eventually likely take care of that. Once i lost weight, my vericose veins appeared in my legs. I have an appt next week with a surgeon to see what I can do there.

So far, I've lost 9 inches off my bust, 9 off my chest, 13 off my waist, 9 off my hips, 6 off my thighs, 4 off my calves and 3 off of my arms. I went from a 20 Women;s pant to a regular 10 and have never been this size ever (the exercise helps). I went from a 22 Women's jacket to a regular 12.

Sat in a middle coach seat last week on a flight and no one cringed when i sat down next to them. i take the stairs by choice, when only a couple of flights. I'm not winded when i run a short distance. When i cheat (and of course i sometimes do), i don't feel everyone is staring at me when i order that dessert.

I can actually describe myself as happy. Go figure.

I still have a bit i want to lose and it's been slow recently (occasional dessert doesn't help), but i know i will get there. Nothing in my spring wardrobe fits, so I have to break the budget again but i want to look my best. Eventually, i'll start dating again, but the focus is still on me right now.

Surgery was the best decision i have ever made. It helped me through those times when i normally would have given up. Kept me on track during long plateaus and sometimes forced me to keep going when i really wanted to blow everything on that steak dinner (yeah, that's not happening).

Letsgetskinny, i loved your post. Keep up the good work and congratulations!

@@Letsgetskinny and @@Elizabeth68 thank you both for your posts. As I start this journey less then two weeks away I am second guessing myself, but I know I need this so bad. And what the two of you have said just drove home how badly I want to be where you are, to be healthy, happy and loving myself for the first time in my 30yrs of life that I can remember.

Thank you ladies for being an inspiration and congratulations.

Let's get skinny! your story motivated me so much. I weighed the exact same amount and am the exact height as you! I was banded on Jan 7th and I am down 30 pounds. I have really been feeling down this week about my diet. I have not strayed from the program once until this week! and of course I hate myself now. Seeing your story reminded me why I had the surgery and that it can be done! good job and thanks for sharing.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
