3 weeks post op with gastric bypass.

Dr recommends 60-80 grams of Protein per day. This is recommended to everyone. Question is, I'm 6'7" - 290 now and large build. This seems low to me. I can get 80 with just food and no Protein shakes. I don't want to add calories for no reason, but feel more Protein may be needed.

Any suggestions

One gram of Protein for every inch you are tall. That is the recommendation from my Bariatric team. So for you 79 grams would be just right.

I'm lost! You are 3 weeks post-op and eating 80 grams of protein from your meals alone. Something is wrong. After RNY surgery your meal volume is so low that it might be almost impossible to get 80 grams of protein from a full liquid diet of 3 meals of 2 ounces per meal.

The protein daily requirement is a combination of the protein that you obtain from meals combined with the protein from supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). So as you progress over the next few months, if you concentrate on high protein meals, you can reduce your reliance on protein supplements. So if you track both the protein in your supplements and in your meals, you can consume less supplements and thereby less calories, which can contribute to your total weight loss.

Don't understand why you're lost, 3 meals @ 20 grams of Protein plus 2 Protein Snacks in day add up to 80 plus. Everyone is different on recommended volume after surgery.

I was told 1/2 cup to start of meat, 1/2 a cup of tuna is over 20g of protein. Yogurt is also very high for the snack. Everyone is different.

I just have a hard time believing that the 5' tall woman and 6'7" guy need the same amount of protein.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
