Hey guys just wondering who did the liquid diet before surgery, and for how long and why? My surgeon said I don't need to and it's not going to be any benefit to surgery but my dietitian said it's beneficial to do two weeks. I've had a Migraine for 3 days and called my surgeons office and reception lady told me to eat if I want to as it doesn't matter either way? Thanks

I didn't do one other than three days prior, to clean out my intestines. No problems, but I was low BMI.

My surgeon says there is no benefit as well. I only had to do Clear Liquids the day before.

I was told to do a liquid Protein diet two weeks before surgery and clear liquids the day before surgery. The reason why is to reduce the size of the liver. The liver rests just over the stomach. Making the liver smaller will help the surgeon during the surgery which ultimately can reduce the risk of complications.

This link has a good explanation.

I did the 2 weeks liquid before, for the same reason Court3625 mentioned above. Relative of mine who went through a different surgeon & different program only had liquids the day before. Don't know if it is related to this or not, but my surgery was less time than hers & my recovery time was much less than hers.

I did some research on this because I felt I was in the minority and wondered why my surgeons don't do pre-op liquid diet. What I found was there is no direct evidence that an ALL liquid diet 2 weeks before the surgery would yield any different outcome than say only doing it 3 days before the surgery. I also read that an all liquid diet does not yield any different results than a low carb diet a couple weeks before the surgery would. So take that for what it's worth, but my guess is if your surgeons are up to date on their research, they know what's up! ????

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
