I'm five weeks out and have been doing pretty well. They have told me no caffeine, but I love my cup of tea in the morning. I've never drank coffee but really want to have a cup of tea. I've sustained from it until now - the pressure is driving me nuts! Do any of you drink any caffeine and what's the reason for not drinking it... I'm guessing dehydration. Is maybe just a cup of tea okay?

Perhaps some watered down herbal tea just to see how your body reacts? Your doc may have reasons, but non caffeinated may be his advice... Call and ask on Monday. His office is there for his patients to ask. I hope??

Good luck

I was told no caffeine but that I could drink caffeine free coffee and tea. I have found many good tasting decafe teas and coffees and I don't really miss the caffeineated versions.

I have been told no caffeine but my NUT says herbal teas are ok. Her directions "drink a cup of tea early in the morning to help you tolerate solids throughout the day." I am allowed to sweeten the tea with honey or agave nectar. No processed sugars or artificial sweeteners. If I drink coffee it must be Decaf.

I have been allowed coffee/teas with caffeine since the 4th week.

I've been drinking caffeine since 4 weeks post op.

I'm a stickler for the rules usually, but this was the one thing I was not willing to give it up. I try to limit to 2 cups a day.

My nutritionist says caffeine dehydrates. She didn't say we couldn't have it but she said not to count it in our fluids for the day. I quit caffeine many years ago so that was okay by me. As always I would follow the advice of my own surgeon/nutritionist! :)

I was originally told no caffeine, but I have between one and two cups of coffee a day and my nutritionist is fine with it.

I've been having coffee since around week 5. My surgeon insists it's fine for his patients as long as we're getting our Water intake. I have unsweetened Starbucks iced coffee in the jug from the store, 2 tbps of half n half, and 2 tbps each of french vanilla and caramel sugar free syrups. I find it aids in my weight loss personally because it energizes me and revs up my system, when I'm in a stall I have an extra cup and I drop a few ounces... I wasn't a coffee drinker before because it upset my stomach, but I can handle it now. I was big on tea, still am. If your surgeon said no caffeine, I wouldn't do it until you've spoken with him or her again. Maybe if you are getting your water intake in daily, they'll compromise with you.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
