I had the gastric sleeve one week ago today... I've lost 16lbs my first week, which I am ecstatic about... But this liquid diet is killing me... I miss food! I miss biting and chewing and all that. I miss flavor! I refuse to eat anything before the surgeon ok's it. I see him in two days... Anybody else feeling this way?

For the chewing need, is using gum an option? My surgery is not until the 26th, so I have not started the liquid portion yet.

I had Gastric sleeve done on 05/06. The first day was miserable.. Even the smallest of sips hurt. By day three that was much improved, as I was able to eat a 5 oz yogurt and drink 5 oz at a time. No pain meds needed after day three either. The hardest thing by far is the liquid diet. I feel starved. It's taking great mental strength to follow but I am doing it. I didn't think I would feel this hungry with such a small stomach. It's pure hell, but this too shall pass.

I'm 2 weeks post op and I'm going crazy with the liquids. I had my week check up and a nutrition class and me and the other sleevers who had their surgery on the same day were totally deflated when the nutritionist told up that we couldn't advance to full liquids until June 9th!!! Our surgery was on April 27th. This is crazy. Everything that I have read on the internet and in blogs say otherwise. Has anyone else had to wait so long??

Wow! Thats a long time to stay on liquids. In contrast, my Doc/Nut have sleever do an 'egg test' on Post-Op Day 7.

If you can eat a whole egg - scrambled or poached or soft boiled, you get moved directly into soft foods. Of course, you have to take about 20 mins to eat the egg!

And, the initial soft foods (fish, veggies, etc.) have to be soft enough that you can reduce to a paste in your mouth before swallowing.

But still, its pretty quick to move into this stage and most patients do.

Your Doc must be ULTRA conservative. Perhaps he doesn't (as mine does) over sew the entire suture lines for the stomach cut to make the sleeve. He may be worried that you need to go very slow to avoid stretching and leaks.

Good luck, but man thats a long time!

I was sleeved 10/28/2010. I was the first vbs in local hospital. All the reps and drs were watching. Talk about performance anxiety. Lol.

First day I was under heavy sedation. Since I was a guinie pig I a 3 day stay. Watched constantly. Liquid was crap but I felt with it. I figured it was better the. The weight. Pain was doable.

About 2 weeks out I was tired of liquids. I tried everything. I even did Jello and puddings. On my diet. But I craved. Real food. I found out that was because my BRAIN needed it not my body. So I kept on the liquid and semi solids.

When I finally hit stage 2 scrambled eggs is what I wanted. Yup I ate them. All 1 bite. Then immediately fell to the floor crying in pain. It hurt. But I could suck grape tomatoes (skinned and seeded them. And chewed lettuce. Which was a no no. But it helped.

5 years out I long for that liquid diet. So I re started my journey.

Be strong. It will get better. It's worth all the pain and the world does open up for you. Be patient and follow all rules and stay in a support group. Get plenty of Water and Protein. Plus Fiber and Vits. They help.

As for the chewing. I froze yes froze some Protein Jello or pudding with plastic spoons in the 2 to 4 oz dixi cups. Makes a great snack and helps with the chewing issue. Just be gentle with the pace you eat them.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
