Struggling to eat enough, one year anniversary next week

Recommended Posts

I'm still losing weight albeit very slowly which I don't need to, not having much of an appetite I'm really spending a LOT of time trying to ensure I get the Protein and calories in.

I have a couple of Protein shakes with semi skimmed milk a day to ensure I'm getting around 50-60 grammes of Protein and then small regular meals on top but as I can only manage a few ozs a sitting I'm feel like I'm constantly eating or drinking.

Struggling with the easy meat Proteins like chicken and beef, fish is much easier.

Anyone else having this sort of challenge?

Yes and I'm over 3 1/4 years out. I can feel for you. One day at a time. Keep on trying.

Thanks for responding, always good to know one's not alone, any handy hints?

:) Whatever you can manage to get in, and keep in do so. I have several liquid meds to help me. Some times it helps and others it doesn't. You really have to take one day at a time.

Other than that, its my church family. I'd be nowhere without their prayers. :)

Because of Diabetes medicine I was on, I felt as if I was forcing myself to eat to make sure my sugar didn't plummet. After a discussion with my Primary Dr. it was determined I should NOT force myself to eat and only take the meds 1x a day. There is only so much food we can get in now. If you are taking Vitamins and supplements and can still get in Protein, you're doing fine. Eventually you will have to alter what you are eating from the losing stage to the maintenance stage. This is where your Nutritionist will be able to help. Best of luck to you and keep up the good work!

I'm not on any meds and am in maintenance stage, have already spoken at length with a nutritionist , and still struggling alas. It seems to be the quantity I can consume, although as with so many others there are several slider foods that are relatively easy - not that bothered about this a I feel I need the calories

At one year out, it almost sounds like you are close to entering the maintenance phase. I had a RNY whereas you had the sleeve, so the experience is a little different. I found out early that mixing foods together gave the food more flavor so I transitioned into eating high Protein homemade chili and Soups for my meals. As a result I am now completely off my Protein shakes. I consume about 65 grams of protein from my meals alone. The rest I make up with a hot cup of cocoa (no sugar added) or a berry smoothie or a Protein Bar. meats are hard to consume but when they are in the form of Soups or chili, they go down easier. Also consuming food in this way, makes it easier to measure volume of my meals. I wrote a short article about my experience and included some recipes. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Thanks will look at your articles for ideas, I am of course hoping that soft foods are not going to be it, going forward, VSG being slightly different to your experience.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
