Recovery room-What I wish someone would have told me

Recommended Posts

Hi! I just wanted to pass some advice on to those who need it. I am 35 and have had three surgeries in the past 9 years. I was 27 when I was dx with thyroid cancer and went in for my very first surgery. It wasn't until much later that my husband had mentioned to me that he was told that I was having "trouble coming out it" in the recovery room. I didn't think much about this at the time but I realized later that no one told me that in recovery when I wake up it is time to start opening my eyes, talking, sitting up or doing what I could do to get of the haze. I seriously woke up in the recovery room and every time they would wake me up I was just so tired I would close my eyes and go back to sleep. I had NO idea. I know it probably sounds silly to some but I honestly did not know.

During my last two surgeries I made it a point that as soon as I became aware I made sure I stayed awake and was doing what I was suppose to do and made it out of recovery much sooner. I hope this helps someone!

I didn't know that - never had any surgery like this (wisdom teeth only) so thanks for sharing!

I wish someone had told me that the "gas pressure" was going to settle up under my rib cage and feel like someone was sitting on my chest.

Luckily they pass quickly. I just wasn't expecting for it to settle under my rib cage on my left side. Made me feel like my heart was hurting.

A tip though. My nurse cupped her hands and basically beat on my upper back and chest. And it really helped to break up the bubbles. Also she gave me an ice pack that I put on my chest where the gas pain was and that seemed to help as well.

Is it the same kind of gas pain you get in your ribcage while you are pregnant?

I don't remember experiencing anything like this while I was pregnant.

It's like "trapped gas". I got sleeved on Monday and I'm finally getting relief. Walking, sitting up and getting someone to pat my chest/back seemed to help.

If your back hurts from the gas use a heating pad. Really helped a lot as well.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
