Yup, a no here. The idea of carbonation stretching my stomach is enough for me too. I haven't had it in 6 months!

no bubbles for me either..even though I'd sacrifice a toe for some seltzer every now and then lol but definitely not worth the risk! apparently I hear it can be very painful too..

Well I'm 4 months out.. I do take a sip of something carbonated every now and then but as far as sitting down and drinking a whole bottle.. I haven't and probably won't. I'm really to scared to.

I haven't had carbonation since I was a kid. For some reason carbonation gives me terrible hiccups, and it takes hours for them to go away, even after just on sip of anything carbonated. Maybe it's an allergy or something. But, Lucky for me that is ONE issue I won't have to deal with. Now coffee....that's another thread! lol

No carbonation ever again were my instructions. I have sipped a beer once post-op (I'm 6 months out), but that was a special occasion. Definitely don't plan to make a habit of that!

My surgeon says no carbonation.

No sodas, no beer, no sparkling Water.

It's so all over the place, isn't it? We just have to use our medical team's advice and our best judgment, but it's tough when people get different instructions.

Our surgeon didn't give any advice, it all came from the nutritionist - she told our group it wasn't because of stomach stretching (which honestly doesn't make sense to me - the bubbles go in, you belch, they're out) but because of discomfort. She said that some patients find it more comfortable to use a SodaStream with a lower amount of carbonation, or to let it sit for a while before trying it, but either way to leave it alone for at least the first few months. I learn slowly, so I've tried it already and it wasn't terribly comfortable unless I let it sit in my mouth for a few seconds for the fizz to go away (which, it turns out, was really all I wanted anyway - bubbles on my tongue - and now that I've had it I'm over it and don't want anymore).

Every single person who has posted to this thread says they were instructed not to drink carbonated beverages....

Thank you, Jamie, for pointing that out. You are correct.

Please forgive me for assuming that not everyone is given the same rules.

Well they definitely seem to be all over the place with most other pre and post-op restrictions, but carbonation is one that seems to be pretty consistent across the board.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
