I used to be a big coffee drinker. At least 6-8 cups of black coffee a day. Since making the decision to have gastric bypass I have cut back to the point now that I have 1 cup a day of caffeinated coffee and one "Half-Caff". My surgery date is March 26, so I have time to cut back even more. Do you know if it is necessary to completely cut out the caffeinated coffee prior to surgery? If so, for how many days? I am already afraid of how crappy I will be during the 2 week liquid diet.

I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow and quit all caffeine 10 days ago..as well as all sugar. No way did I want to go through withdrawal while recuperating from the surgery. It was not required as my Pre-op diet just started today.

They have required me to stop all caffeine. Soda, not just for caffeine, but for the carbonation. And any drinks that have caffeine. Tea, coffee etc. I'm still not even scheduled for surgery, and they had me quit soon after my first dietary appointment. I had to be off caffeinated coffee, tea soda and other drinks by my last dietary appt. which was yesterday. It wasn't easy, soda was harder than coffee, even though I only drank 2 diet Coke's per day, I still want one. Coffee, is not the same to me. Decaf and sugar free hazelnut Creamer, just isn't cutting it. I switched to the sf drops in iced Water, or decaf tea with lemon, iced.

I also cut out all caffeine about 10 days before surgery. Withdrawal was horrible, but there's no way I'd want to be dealing with that and with surgical recovery at the same time. Do yourself a favor and cut it out early.

My nurse practitioner gave me the go-ahead to try coffee once I could routinely get in over 80 oz of Water per day. I've been at that for a couple of weeks, but didn't want to try it out during the work week in case things went badly.

I am just shy of 8 weeks post-surgery and had my first cup of caffeinated coffee this morning. It was divine. I won't ever go back to my old level of coffee consumption, but it's great to know I can tolerate it.

That is a great idea. I think I will go with the no caffeine 10 days out like you did. It sounds doable. That is also great advice about once you can get 80 oz. of Water in it is okay to have a cup of coffee. Thanks so much for sharing that information.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
