Had the Flu bad and throwing up

Recommended Posts

I was banded May 15, 2014 and everything has gone pretty good. I have lost a lot of weight and am only about 5 pounds from my goal. But during the holidays I got the flu really bad and threw up a lot. Now after the flu I can sometimes keep food down but other times everything I eat comes back up. I can not get in to see the doctor or nurse until late in Feb. I called and left a message with the office and they called me back and told me to go on liquids only for a whole week! It is soooooo hard for me to go on liquids but I am really scared. They messaged me that I probably have a dilation. What is a dilation? I am scared I have messed up my band and I do not know what they mean by saying I probably have a dilation. Can anyone out there help me????? Please write to me because I am really scared I have messed up my band. I do not know what they mean by me possibly having a dilation. Can anyone out there with experience help me understand what a dilation is???? Today I have only taken in liquids but I am scared I will not be able to make it a whole week on liquids and then another whole week on mushy food. I need your input so please write to me to help me understand what is going on with me. What do they mean that I may have a dilation? I stayed on liquids today but am scared I will not be able to make a whole week on liquids then another whole week on mushy food. I am sometimes able to eat and every thing stays down but other times everything I eat comes right back up. Today I stayed only on liquids but I am afraid I will not be able to make it a whole week on nothing but liquids and then another whole week on mushy foods. Someone out there PLEASE help me understand what is going on with my band. All comments are truly welcome and appreciated. Thanks for listening and please write to me to tell me what you think may be going on. Again, the office can not see me for another two to three weeks and I do not know If I can do what they tell me. Liquids for a week and then mushy food for a week. All comments are truly welcome. Thanks for listening.

I have been banded 4 years, and have never been sick to the point where I have vomited...to be honest, it is something that concerns me...the band was designed for food to go through it downward, not the other way around...and with as much force that it can bring....

I am also extra careful about motion sickness, drinking tap Water, strange food in foreign countries, etc etc.

We are going to Cancun Mexico in a couple of days, and already I am thinking ahead about these things, and what to do if I should get sick (I do have a plan)

As far as liquids.....this is something I have learned to do on my own, about every 6-8 weeks....and then I only need to do it for 1-3 days.....as preventive maintenance...

I have noticed whenever people have problems, the first thing the Dr does is put the patient on full liquids.....

If he/she does not think you could do it, then he/she will completely empty the band, achieving the same thing...and I have read that that brings on other possible problems....

PS:, people use the term vomiting, throwing up, along with the band....IT IS NOT the same thing!

I have been stuck many times when first starting out...and have never vomited! That is something entirely different.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
