Feeling like you're getting no where

Recommended Posts

hi..I'm new here. My name is Melissa. I was sleeved on Oct.28, 2014. I feel like I've completely fell off the bandwagon. There are things I'm unsure about..like how to order when I eat out. I always feel like I've ordered the wrong thing. What's the easiest way to get back on track and start feeling good about yourself.

Did your doctor give you any info on what to eat post op? What are you eating now?

There are a dozen different versions of postop diet plans, but you should be following what your surgeon and nut recommend. If you don't have nutritional support, I can tell you when I was at your stage, I was just starting regular food. Until I met goal, my diet was all about Protein and non-starchy veggies. I never worried about fat content. I also had a small amount of fruit....usually 1/2 banana or peach or mango slices or berries mixed in my protein smoothie. Stay away from bread, Pasta, rice and processed foods. Read labels and use common sense when ordering from a menu. Try and get 60g protein minimum (I shoot for 80-100g) and 64oz fluids.

@@mmckaskle Your question is vague and I don't know how to answer it. What does falling off the bandwagon mean? What are you ordering that you think is wrong? What are you eating? You're almost 2 months out, so I assume you've had some success. What have you been doing so far? Do you have surgical team you can turn to? Give a little more specifics so people can respond with something that might help.

I wouldn't be ordering out to begin with..There is not a fast food takeout out there that will do your body good.

OP didn't say she ordered out she asked what to eat when out. I'm assuming she's referring to order out at restaurants.

Still doesnt change my advice. I have yet to see a healthy take out place...

Many Take-out places have alternate menus. I stick with places where I can get nutritional values like Panera, for example. Since I am gone a lot I sometimes have no choice but to order out. Its about being flexible and making choices that work. One meal from a take out place will not derail you if you don't let. That is advice from both my surgeon and my NUT. Everything in moderation and make good choices and be mindful. No need to be extreme.

You don't get out much, do you? ;)

There's the "Fit and Trim" menu at Ruby Tuesdays.

Subway has healthy salads and some good sandwiches.

And Panera (Half Asiago Roast Beef Signature Sandwich on Asiago cheese Bread), Applebees (Caesar salad with Chicken), and Wendy's (Chili with Cheese) all offer some good WLS food choices.

All Mexican restaurants make chicken fajitas (chicken, onions, peppers, spices, oil). That's a great meal--actually, it's several great meals. :)

It's not the restaurant that's unhealthy, but which food(s) you order and how much you eat and how much you take home for another meal.

In my one year since surgery, I have eaten at IHOP 3 times. I don't order the pancakes or French Toast, I even stay away from omelets because they put pancake batter in it to make it fluffy. I order scrambled eggs and bacon and hot tea. I take 1/2 the eggs and bacon home, and the tea to go so that I can sip it on the way home. No damage done. I have had Wendy's chili twice and Baker's Square chili once, and a chicken fajita at a Mexican restaurant. I think because of the sodium, my favorite Chinese food is off the board until I reach maintenance.

Yes you can eat healthy at a take out place. I can get steam tofu and and broccoli from my corner store Chinese take out. ask for the sauce on the side and it's a winner. Even my local pizza place makes a really great garden salad that comes with a hard boiled egg. If you eat meat you get frilled chicken breast on it. Request oil & vinegar instead of dressing, hold the croutons and you're good to go.

HOWEVER

OP wants to know what to order at a restaurant. So the recommendations for places like Panera and iHop are very helpful.

It's about learning to make good choices. Just keep in mind Protein, then veg always.

I find most if not all takout foods have extremely high levels of sodium and preservatives. Not what I would call "healthy". Remember healthy is not just not being fat anymore..What you stated may be a better alternative than the alternatives on the menu, sure. But not the best choices, but thats just my opinion. After going through this, I dont plan on touching take out food ever again..

And FWIW the OP is less than 2 months out of surgery, is it really recommended to be eating take out/processed foods already? Isn't that what got us all in trouble in the first place?

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
