Had breast reduction on Monday -- still in hospital

Recommended Posts

I had my breast reduction on Monday and I am massively uncomfortable. But more worrisome than the pain is that I have been running a fever and one of my breasts is more swollen than the other. The surgeon was worried about a possible hematoma and decided to keep me for observation for a couple of extra days. The only good thing about that is that someone else has to deal with my drains. I'm afraid that when I strip the lines, it looks different from when the professionals do it.

If you ever have an extended stay in a hospital, be prepared to have to fight for healthy, low carb food. Even though I was on their "controlled carb" plan, they served me Pasta and angel food cake in one meal. Breakfast was quiche that was obviously made with flour in the filling.

My husband brought me my ipad today so I can finally catch up with my "peeps" on BariatricPal. I was having withdrawal symptoms!

It's 4 am. My hospital roommate is in a great deal of pain. She's a very nice lady but she is very expressive and that makes her a difficult roommate. I selfishly hope she feels better soon.

@@HawaiianTexan don't worry too much about the surgery. It's only been 3 days and I'm already getting better. The first couple of days were rocky but now I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And did I mention that my surgeon, Dr. Cynthia Goodman, is a miracle worker? I now have average sized breasts that are kind of perky. Monday morning I had tube socks with rocks. I don't have the relief from my back pain yet, though. She had to do some axillary liposuction that went into my back. I think the liposuction hurts much worse than the incisions. And she said the swelling will be with me for up to 3 months.

Cake and Pasta, smh. The quiche, just eat the filling. On the other hand, sorry about the setbacks. Hopefully everything will begin to settle soon.

Wow. I wonder what they do with Vegans. I'm sorry that they've given you a hard time with the diet restrictions, and that you've had a rough recovery so far. Sending well wishes and healing thoughts your way.

About the hospital carb thing.........there is a certain hospital that I refuse to be admitted to anymore (rhymes with Saint Schmargaret's in NW Indiana) that puts this hideous gravy on everything.....every thing. And I have never been in a hospital yet that can get a diet plan correct over the week-end.

I'm waiting for my Breakfast tray. It will probably be pancakes with syrup! These people are clueless about low carb meals. But the good news is that I will be released sometime today so I can finally get healthy food in the proper proportions at home. Thank goodness for my VSG. If I had my normal appetite, I would have fallen to the temptation to eat what they served me.

For those of you considering breast reduction -- go for it. Don't wait 15 extra years like I did. Why suffer? It has turned out that even with my less than optimal post surgical experience, it is so worth it. I am so thrilled to not have all that extra weight on my shoulders and back.

I've had two surgeries in my life, VSG and a breast reduction....both were two of the best decisions I have ever made!

I had the reduction 15-16 years ago...and they still look pretty good...nipples face forward and not to the floor!

I will say that after losing 85 pounds, if I bend over naked, my boobs look a bit like socks with a tennis ball in the toe!

They say breast reductions have one if the highest satisfaction rates if any surgery...I believe it! Enjoy the new and improved girls!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
