Hernia repair during surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone! I'm a newbie and looking forward to getting support and advice from others on this journey. I have read several times in several different places about sleevers having hernia repairs during their surgery. It often sounds to me like the hernia wasn't seen in pre-op tests. Is this often the case? I mentioned to my surgeon that I had developed a little lump next to my belly button and wondered if it could be a hernia. He said he'll see when I have the surgery and if so he'll fix it. But he didn't look at the lump and there wasn't any mention of it in the pre-op tests. I guess I shouldn't be concerned if my dr isn't. But does hernia repair cause complications? Thanks for any replies!

Hey, I had my hernia repaired during surgery. I had a few complications the first four months couldn't keep nothing down. I don't think it had anything to do with the hernia. Don't worry all will be okay. Congrats on getting your sleeve soon and joining the losers bench! Woo hoo!

It's common for a surgeon to repair a hiatal hernia during VSG surgery. (Mine was repaired during VSG.)

However, an abdominal hernia seems to me to be a horse of a different color. Not the same thing at all (not strictly part of the gastrointestinal system).

But I could be wrong.

They knew I had a hiatal hernia before surgery after an endoscopy. The doc said he'd wait until during the surgery to determine if he would repair the hernia (depending on how large it was).

I have a ventral hernia and my surgeon said I needed to get my wls done first and then they would do the hernia repair... He won't do it at the same time.

Hmmm. I had a hiatal hernia diagnosed during the barium swallow test and the PA told me the probably won't do anything about it. That kind of bothered me because now that I know about it I want it fixed. Another thing they told me is that I am a slow swallower and its another thing they don't do anything about.

I am telling you, I didn't think I was all that healthy before I started this journey but all these little picayune things they discovered make me feel even sicker.

Bring on the sleeve!

My surgeon told me before hand that if I had a hiatal hernia he would repair it while doing the VSG, which is what happened. I was shocked to see they billed my insurance $40k for each item. Glad I didn't have to pay that much. I didn't have any after effects due to the hernia repair. Good luck on your surgery.

I too had a hiatal hernia repair done as part of my sleeve operation. The doctor even had a consent form for me to sign, so this must be a common problem. He even gave me photos of the sleeve and hernia work, which were really interesting. It was like: hi stomach, bye stomach!

I had a Hiatel Hernia the size of a small melon, my surgeon said the sleeve took 30 minutes but the hernia took 2 hours. I am so happy it fixed it for me !

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
