I find myself doing 2 things that we're told not to do and that's drinking with meals (not all of the time) and possibly eating too fast. It doesn't take me 20-30 minutes 20-30 to finish my meal and I'm becoming a little concerned. Also, lately I've been thirsty while eating or like 5 minutes after eating and I can't help but drink!

Someone, please help me with this because I'm really not trying to sabotage this!!

I had the same issue, my doctor told me not to worry about it. Sips here and there are fine and talk about it stretching your stomach are incorrect but please note EVERY doctor is different but for me I do it and I am fine.

Guilty too! I am going to stop having drinks near me when eating. I think I am eating slow and I look next to me and my husband has barely taken 2-3 bites and my plate is empty. Hang in there! We are living and learning! Good luck.

I think not drinking with meals has less to do with stretching the sleeve and more to do with not washing the food through you quickly. If you let it sit, you absorb more nutrients (or so I've heard) and you stay fuller longer.

That being said, I drink while I eat if 1. I accidentally eat too much (I'm 3 months out and this happens from time to time when I'm trying something new) and 2. When I'm out with people who don't know I've had surgery. If you drink while you eat, you can eat more, so it comes it handy if you feel uncomfortably full or if you want to look like you're eating an almost normal amount (I still can't come anywhere close to finishing a normal serving, but I look like regular dieter if I drink while I eat, instead of like I have an eating disorder or didn't like the food). I'd say I do think maybe once a week. Definitely not a habit.

There's a topic on this forum called "Why no Drinking While Eating After Gastric Sleeve Surgery". Someone added a video link to explain why. After watching video, I'm going to do everything possible not to drink during meals.

There's a great visual of how basically the liquid causes everything to slide out of your stomach much faster and makes you hungry sooner. Not drinking makes food hold much longer and feel fuller long.

Check it out. When you see the difference you will understand this rule. I'm no longer even sipping!

Yes I've seen the video an it's the same info I got thru pre surgery classes. Mine told me not to sit with a drink at meal time. Its a new learned behavior. It does make a difference. I eat all Protein first then a bite or 2 of veggy. The longer I can go without drink after eating which I make it 30 min the longer I can go without eating again which I eat 3 small plates a day (I can only eat 1/2 cup at meals period) an 2 snacks..great video...

It's been a bit of a struggle for me as well. Not too bad, but there are times when I just need to have a sip or two to at the end of my meal to kinda help everything go down. My nut said that long-term it will be fine to have about a shot glass worth of liquid with a meal. I'm nowhere near that....just a sip or two and only occasionally.

I've had a harder time getting my liquid in post-op vs pre-op because I was in such a habit of drinking two big glasses of Water with each meal in order to help weight loss. Now that habit is counterproductive. Just another life adjustment to make!!

Good Luck!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
