Bariatricpal scared me shitless

Best choice ever. I too read good and bad before but in all honesty, look at the surgeon's accolades and history. My surgeon had done about 4,000 successful surgeries and not one complication, so that helped too. You will totally have doubted leading up to surgery but it's so so normal! Good luck

Do you trust your doctor that his/her team? I doesn't sound like it. Is your doc at a "center of excellence"? That is a designation they give docs who has met certain criterion and who have excellent outcomes and low rates of complication. If you're doc is not a a center of excellence then you might find a center with that designation near you and get another opinion, see I I makes you feel better about the whole thing.

I had my surgery about 17 months ago now and it was a great decision. But did I have second thoughts? Doubts? Sure I did, even for about 10 days after the surgery. Then it started to feel better. I went back to work in time and now I am still slowly losing and can eat most anything , drink most anything but with great moderation and never do I feel like stuffing myself, I just don't. I feel very, very happy to have lost what I have , and that I don't ever feel like I'm going to be heavy again. The habits your sleeve makes you adopt will help you immensely. Best wishes whatever you decide.

I am there with you

I have lost 164 pounds on the bariatric diet in just 11 months now. Why can't I just continue this diet and then stick to a 1200 or 1500 one (twice my current food level) for life rather than go through with the sleeve surgery that is currently set to go through on 9/29.

Scared? You betcha I am.

Thanks for your honesty. How are you feeling now that you are a couple weeks out?

I am still in the "What was I thinking" stage. Still on a liquid diet, tired all the time, and the Constipation is simply AWFUL despite using Amitiza, colace, Miralax and milk of magnesia (one or even all every single day). I wake up with nausea, and go to bed full to the neck and just barely making my minimums. Semisolid food should begin on Monday or Tuesday and in a way I am dreading it and what it will do to add to my constipation.

I have no pain or discomfort anywhere in my surgery sites, or inside. But I cannot imagine at this point that I made the right decision although my doctor's PA insists life as I somewhat knew it will return eventually. If I had to do this over again, I am NOT so sure that I would do it and that is the honest truth.

But give me a couple of months and perhaps I will feel a complete turnaround.

Best decision I ever made! My only regret is not having the sleeve years ago! 1 year out and never a regret!

Ahhhh, yes....constipation was the worst. I knew it was coming though as a: I always get constipated after surgery and B) b:even with all that Water, a lack of Fiber is going to stop things for a while.

Just remember your digestive track has experienced serious trauma. You will begin to feel better. I felt that way too....sometimes still do a little and I am 3 mos out. Once you see that weight falling off and feel yourself getting into shape you won't regret the decision to go through the suffering.

I'm two weeks from surgery and more excited than afraid. What I have read here has only made me glad of my decision, stay positive!

I had the same response when I was in your position. I came very close to backing out after reading some of the posts. Thank God I didn't!! One year later, my life is completely different. I've lost 140 pounds, am officially a marathon runner, and have done the hard emotional work. The journey is what you put into it. Good luck to you!

I was also very scared and nervous. My BMI is low. I kept trying to talk myself into Oh I should be able to do this myself. I realized it would never happen. If you have reached your surgeon thoroughly and he has many many sleeves under his belt, you should be fine. I was sleeved yesterday. Very little pain, no gas, no nausea. I've been walking the hospital halls and sucking on ice chips. I am SOO happy that I've finally taken this step. Good luck!

Well, I had nausea and vomiting in the hospital, had to stay an extra day, plus I'm losing my hair. I got over the throwing up in a day and got a pixie cut for my hair. This surgery is worth it. I've lost over seventy pounds, can move around so much better and am off my blood pressure medication . I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Today I am 1 week post-op (sleeve), and I'm feeling great. I was frightened too, dreaming with problems, going to bed 3 am with anxiety, and especially after reading a lot of stuff and watching a sleeve video, things got worse. I suggest you stick with your plan, and trust the doctor you chose. Try to fill your days with work or other activities, in order to avoid thinking too much on it.

My post-op has been great, I don't feel any pain at all, can walk 2 miles every day, and have already lost 12 pounds. I don't feel starving at the liquid diet, so only positive stuff.

If you need help, I suggest you go see a psychologist instead of the doctor, since with this latter you will discuss only technical matters, but you can discuss your fears and certitudes with the first.

Take care and good luck!

Caio

Hi! I am 3 weeks out from having my sleeve. I worried about it until I had found the right surgeon that I was comfortable with his success rates and he also had no leaks or infections add of yet. I also have small children and waited a year to absolutely be sure. It's natural to be frightened but having confidence in your surgeon is very important. I have had no complications and I am down 30 pounds so far! So was 230 now 200.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
