when did you go back to work?

Recommended Posts

Im currently waiting to see the surgeon and get my surgery date. I am hoping that the surgery will happen in a couple of weeks. Here is my question... How soon did you go back to work or did you FEEL you could go back to work? I am a teacher and have to go back after labor day, is 2 weeks enough time off before having to go back? I at least planned ahead and got my room all ready for the next school year already. So, I would not need to do anything really physical. Any insight would be helpful! Thanks!

That is a great question! I don't know and would like to find out as well. I have my surgery Aug 28th and planning on only taking off that week after so 10 days ish so I hope that is enough time!

I have a sedentary desk job and I am not required to bend or squat or pick up anything heavy. Having said that, I was ready to go back to work on day 11. I would have been in no shape to do a lot of moving around or walking or lifting.

But there are a some threads I've read where the people felt great after surgery and were back at work in 3 days. I guess it all depends on how well you can recuperate.

Everyone is different. I didn't understand why my doctor recommended 5 weeks. But I'm glad I took off 5 weeks. While I starts feeling better after 2 weeks, my energy level didn't return until week 4.

She also recommended the 5 weeks to allow me to get through the first few food stages without the stresses of my coworkers watching & commenting on my every move.

I'm so glad I stayed out for 5 weeks.

I was planning on taking two weeks, but ended up going back to work after 7 days. I am a vet tech/part owner with a mobile vet practice, so very active job with lots of standing, bending, twisting and lifting. I did have a 25 lb weight limit for 3 weeks, so we had to schedule surgeries and large animal appointments accordingly. I was tired but had no real issues. The important part was making sure I had plenty of Protein Drinks along since I was on full liquids for 18 days postop.

I had my surgery on a Tuesday and went back to work on Monday. I had all my food and drinks ready in my lunch cooler so that part was easy. I did get tired and would go to bed shortly after getting home from work. It took me about 5 or 6 weeks to get my stamina back but I felt okay after two weeks. Everybody is different so you will have to play it by ear and do what is best for you.Good luck and hope you have no issues with surgery and a quick recovery.

I was originally taking two weeks off but I was just extended for another week. Some will be able to go back right away and then others like me will not. I still have pain and was unable to take any liquids in for 5 days. I am better but still have some pain issues and very low energy. No way could I go back tomorrow as scheduled. Best of luck to you.

Plan on having this talk with my surgeon at some point - I've seen MANY nurses go out for surgeries/injuries and come back on "light duty" only to hurt themselves worse because they were pushed past their work restriction. My intention is to stay out until I'm released from all restrictions - I don't know how well that's going to work, but last thing I want to happen is to pop a staple or worse 3 weeks out because I felt like I could go back early.

It's definitely different for everyone but I went back after a week and a half. My job is mostly on my feet and I've done fine!

I felt pretty crappy my first week after surgery but right at 7 days I turned a corner!

Well I got my surgery date and its Aug. 22nd! That gives me just one day shy of 2 weeks before starting back to work. I have to make this happen, im a teacher, too and just can't take the first week of school off. Thankfully, the first day is a thursday (minimum day schedule) then Friday is our early out day, so even if im really tired or whatever, I only have to make it thru 2 half days, basically, then get 2 days off before going back to full days on Monday. Im so excited!!

I was very fortunate and had zero issues after surgery, I didn't use the morphine and didn't take any pain meds following my Tuesday morning surgery. Was released from the hospital on Thursday morning. I felt fine but was a bit sore, like I'd done too many crunches. If I HAD to I could have returned to work on Friday but my boss was super and let me work from home the following week. I returned to work, with zero issues, 10 days after surgery. Tired more easily than usual but have done fine.

I am 2 weeks out from surgery. I went back after 1 week doing half days and I am still on half days for the first half of this week. I am just super worn out by the end of my half days and have been napping for about an hour when I get home. The only real issue I've had is keeping up my Water intake at work as I work at a busy ophthalmology practice and I am in an exam room basically all day long. Good luck!

I was sleeved 7/24 and today is my first day back to work. It has been really good.. I have a desk job so I'm just sitting ;) I have found it so much easier to get my fluids in here at work vs at home. Good luck and CONGRATS!!!

I took a week, I could have gone back in five days, but did not. Mostly because my job is my least favorite place in the world. I just wanted the extra time away from it. LOL.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
