Is the sleeve safe long term?

Recommended Posts

I feel like I was going to die without it, from obesity and despair. I am not depressed or have mental illness, but the weight I was carrying, im only a week out and 30lbs down, was really not good for me in any way, shape or form, my spirit is getting stronger than its been in years. So I believe this is saving my life, not taking away from it :)

Does the sleeve always take the hunger away ? So u don't feel like eating more

For the first year no, I wasn't particularly hungry. I had plenty of fat to feed my body. But in maintenance, Here's my checklist....

Head hunger....check

Cravings.....check

Acid "hunger"..... No

Real, light headed, super cranky, gonna pass out hunger....check

I'm actually hungry more often now than I ever was before surgery and HAVE to eat every 3-4 hours. But of course I never eat to fullness, either. It's just a new normal way to feel.

Getting light headed.... on standing... blood pressure a little low... body takes time to adjust...Fatigue... needing more sleep then I use to..Those are all daily normal's for me.... . no head hunger no body hunger... no hunger of any kind... Though for some that changes... and for some two yrs out no hunger still everyone is different. My docs pac had the surgery and she still does not have hunger two yrs later. It is different for everyone.

I got wind that some in my family were "worried" about me and talking about me. I sent a general email to everyone telling them I was doing this, about my decision process, research about both obesity and this procedure, etc., and what it would mean for the rest of my life, and how happy I am about this chance to be healthy after this long struggle. I thanked them all in advance for their support. It has been great. Support has come pouring out of the woodwork and the known critics are silent or supportive. What a relief. Some have answered with lots of interested questions, too, and I love educating people!

Surgeons have been doing total and partial gastrectomies on cancer and ulcer patients for well over a hundred years. With proper Vitamin supplementation and diet, there is no reason a complication-free VSG would shorten your life. But obesity-related comorbidities certainly could.

Thank you! I'm just one of those people who thinks long term but I'm 40 now lol so let's do this!

I had the same concern, even 8 days out I was feeling guilty, God gave me this stomach for a reason, blah, blah, blah... and then I was like, well Im abusing it now, being a glutton... So I go back n forth emotionally but Im a newbie. I already feel like Im failing in many ways, but Im going to keep on keeping on. Im so glad you got such an uplifting positive response to your question, definitely made me feel better!

Hi everyone! I'm new here.

I really would like to have the sleeve done. I'm 5''4" and weigh 232 lbs. BMI 40 with no comorbidities should I have the surgery? I'm torn because I think I could hunker down with a low fat diet and exercise and get to 200. But then Id still have 55 lbs to lose. I'm starting the options class in sept at kaiser woodland hills, Ca. I will see how it goes. The surgery is so drastic and just wondered if anyone else felt this way. Like if I got my head in the game I could really lose the 87 pounds without the sleeve, but then again I've tried so many diets and lost 20 or more and gained it back. I get so discouraged having so much to lose. With this tool it would force me to eat less and give me more motivation seeing the pounds come off quicker.. I just don't want to regret it. Anyone pls share, would you do it all over again or not? Should I go for it?

Thx for your time reading this..your responses would be helpful in deciding since I'm on the fence..

I am in nearly the same boat as you. I am 5'2" at 280lbs. I have tried many different diets. Many different thing and yes, I will lose about 20-30lbs but then I gain it all back plus some. It was a cycle for many years. And the last two years previous I thought the same oh I'll wait to see if I need the surgery, I want to do it on my own. Well yeah. Two years later and I am talking to my PCP tomorrow about having the surgery. If I would have done it two years ago, I would be well on my way to a healthier life. I also have no co-morbidities and BMi is 52.

Safer than obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, peripheral edema, skin break down... dying young.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
