Staying away from aspartame

Recommended Posts

I stay away from aspartame as much as possible, and I know it will be difficult to find sugar free things that don't have it in it. I've ordered some sf Jello and pudding from Amazon, but if anyone has any other sources they have tapped into please let me know.

I'm one of those that aspartame gives a headache, plus other more subtle symptoms.

I use stevia both liquid and powder when my diabetes insists I need a touch of sweet.

Phony sugars of any kind are fine with me. I avg maybe one packet a day. Mostly in coffee and Latte.

Both my parents had aspartame poisoning. Gum is the worst for you, so I chew aspartame free gum. I ordered some pudding and Jello from a brand called better bowls. I hope it's good, and I will post a report after trying them.

I'm having the same concern. I am still pre op. However, I got some stevia drops and plain Jello. I'm going to try to work some magic and make my own. I spend a whole year fake sugar free and I don't want to go back now.

Splenda which is the brand name for Sucralose seems to be the better sweetener. You can cook with it and it is sweet like sugar without the calories and the bad effects of sugar. Aspartame is made from amino acids, but some people have a reaction or don't like the taste of it. Also, you can't cook with it because the heat destroys the sweetness of it. It is cheap, so lots of products still use it. Since Sucralose went off patent a number of years ago, more and more products have switched over to it. This is good because now sugar free products taste as good as sugar rich products without the negative effects of aspartame and its inferior taste. Rebiana or Truvia is another compound that is sweet like sugar. I don't find it as sweet but some people like it.

Don't believe the hype that some sweeteners are natural or artificial. They all start with natural ingredients and processes them. Aspartame comes from protean and the two amino acids that make it are separated. Sucralose comes from sugar and is processed to make it hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. Truvia is an natural extract which is processed heavily. There were earlier studies that showed Truvia to be carcinogenic, but were later refuted. There are some who say sweeteners trick the brain and make you hungry. I never found this to be true. I think sweetness is a flavor and there are different ingredients which have this flavor. Some are really bad for you like sugar or corn Syrup and some are fine like sucralose and truvia. Tricking the brain? give me a break.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
