No loss, no restriction

I have not lost any weight in months, a total of 17 after surgery. I feel no restriction and it's as if the band is not there. I've had at least 6 fills since August. This is just another fail, I guess. So frustrated with myself. Now I have a foreign object in my body for no reason... Battling pneumonia at the moment which I'm now reading could be a complication from lap band. Tried to stay positive for a long time but not feeling it anymore. Has anyone else experienced absolutely no restriction no matter how many fills you get?

The band won't cause pneumonia.

What does your daily diet look like? What foods are you eating?

No two days look the same... Except for the coffee. :) I usually eat almonds and string cheese or yogurt for Breakfast. For lunch a salad on work days. dinner is a problem because I'm eating whatever I can find while I cook for everyone else. I could be doing better but I've never had a problem with what I'm eating (not a junk food or fast food person), just the quantity- which is why I went for the band. Even though I know it's not the point, I was hoping it would take some of the decision making power away from me by physically limiting my intake.

The band doesn't physically limit intake. If you can sit down and eat Protein first and then veggies, it's designed to dim your hunger but it won't stop you from eating too much.

The sleeve and bypass force you to eat less. The band is more a voluntary means of losing weight. Unfortunately, many doctors sell the band as a tool that limits how much you can eat. It won't for most.

Your band may be tight enough as it is but you won't know unless you eat planned meals as most banders have been instructed to eat. It appears as though you're on a diet and you don't have to treat this as a diet.

This aint gonna work!! I highly recommend you have a visit with a bariatric nutritionist. Your doctor probably has one on staff or available.

My stats are very similar to yours. Keep getting fills! I have had 5 and currently have 3.1 cc's in my band. I am going for my 6th tomorrow. Keep it up and hopefully the magic will happen once we get into that green zone!

Also you have to eat mostly Protein at every meal. Measure your food, not much more then 1 cup consisting of quality Protein (chicken, fish) a small amount of veggies and, if you have to, a small amount of carbs.

Also, I have never been a "bad" eater either, just a little too much really, so I thought this would be great for me too. I have to admit that I am getting discouraged as well, but hoping I am one of those slow starters.

I haven't had my first fill yet and haven't felt any serious restriction from my band since surgery a month ago. I find what helps the most is just sticking to my eating plan. I measure/weigh out my food for each meal and even if I still feel hungry after, I just stop. And then I go do something else to take my mind off of it. In two hours if I'm still hungry, I'll eat a small snack like a low fat string cheese. Usually though, I'll find that I'm not hungry anymore. While you're trying to get to the green zone, this is just something you have to do. It's hard to beat the head hunger, I know, but it will be worth it in the end!

Have you talked to your surgeon about your lack of restriction? Perhaps he/she will give you a bigger fill the next time you go in if you explain what is going on.

And what are you doing for exercise? If you up your exercise routine a little bit, you might also see more of a loss on the scale.

I was banded in August and have just now hit the Green.... Once you're there, you'll know why it's called THE SWEET SPOT. As you've read over and over again, everyone hits that spot with a different number of fills and different amounts of Fluid in their bands. I look at my band as a gift... I will not lie to you......, I've felt like I was "dieting" over the first four months! But, that gave me time to get used to: eating slower, taking smaller bites, learning the hard way about "being stuck," "sliming," and "productive burping." I also used that time and the few months before my surgery to reintroduce my body to this foreign concept called EXERCISING. Just hang in there... That SWEET SPOT will come and you will be amazed at how little food you'll need to feel satiated!!!!

I was banded August 1, 2013......after 10fills and 13 months I'd finally lost my first 12lbs. So for an entire year I thought Id made a big mistake chosing lap band. But like a light switch and being filled to 8.2 in my 10cc band the weight began melting off.

Only advice I have is to keep going for fills. Dont give up so easily. The band does work.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
