Debating on getting more fills

Recommended Posts

Of course I know that you aren't my doctor, and of course I will ask him all this when I see him, I just want the bander viewpoint please. No flames, por favor!!!

Due to an emergency unfill in Dec. after tightness in my chest, I now have the same amount of fill in my band as right after surgery (2cc). I am told to eat 1/4c of food at a meal, and if I'm still hungry continue to 1/2c. I try to stick with this and most times do a good job, though I could easily eat more (I really try not to because I don't want to end up in the ER again). Most times I can make it 3-4 hrs without feeling hungry again, though other times I do get hungry. Does that mean I am at restriction already or pretty close? Is that possible with so little fill? When I did have 4ccs I felt I didn't even want water--I could barely eat anything (the scale was going down at a frightfully fast pace, too). I was thinking to ask the doc to only put in .5cc this time, but I could do ok where I'm at.

Feedback, please. Thanks!

I only have 3 ccs in mine. What everyone needs to get to restriction is different. I have not had a fill in two years. I don't need it. Maybe in years to come I will but now I don't and really I don't think you need to either if having more made you sick. Some people have sensitive stomachs like mine which takes three weeks on liquids after a fill. I think you would be smart not to get anymore right now.

It's not now or never, so if you feel like you do need one in the coming weeks/months it will be available to you then. There's that. And if you're doing well on your small portion but don't yet have the duration, there's that. The important thing is you are really listening to your body. I'm going to see my surgeon tomorrow and they will have the fill all set, ready to go. I'm not ready to go. I'm feeling good where I am. My next appointment after that is in three weeks then we spread out to monthly for a while. I don't know how much Fluid is in my band. No priming took place and I've had four fills. I believe this surgeon is of the small frequent fills school. I know it's up to me to determine when the appetite is manageable or if it needs dimming. Good luck to you!

I am a little nervous. I was banded in November and have had two fills... Doctor says I have a total of 5 cc's in a 14 cc band. I feel I can still eat to much. Is this normal????

Hello newbie! Don't take this the wrong way? You will be better off starting your own thread/topic. There are only 4 people following this thread at this time. Your post is what they call a "Hijack". It's not as bad as it sounds and we all do it but in your case, if you start a new topic, you'll expose your question to hundreds of eyes and not just 8.

To answer your question, yes it's normal. I didn't feel any restriction till my 3rd fill. Eating properly(Protein first) is essential. You're in what we call "Bandster Hell". It's that period of time where the band is not adjusted properly yet and we still have that old appetite before surgery. Basically, you're still on a diet if you want to lose weight until your band is adjusted properly. Good luck. Hang in there, most all of us had to endure this phase.

PureVida, I love this topic and it's so different for each of us. What amount of restriction is the correct amount to be in the green zone? I think I could handle another .25 CC fill but I prefer to enjoy a little leeway with a looser band. I still struggle with the eat fast/big bite syndrome, so looser is better for me. It's going to be different for each of us. We can all adapt of course but some not as easily as others.

Sounds like you were in the red zone for too long? There's no harm in sneaking up on the green zone. My doctor did it with .25 CC injections. Probably took 2 more fills to get there but in the meantime, I learned many lessons on how I should be eating with restriction.

There are many on the forum who recommend getting fills under fluoro and gawd I wish my doctor had the equipment to give fills this way.

re: "Does that mean I am at restriction already or pretty close? " not exactly

and your variability of the sensation of 'hunger' is in a state of flux, as there are lots of physiological as well as psychoemotional adapations we make in the early postOp phase.

Further, as our bodies daily are adaptive to varous environmental stresses, a rolling normal state of 'homeostasis' occurs.

It's early in your recovery period to leap on the "if this, then that" conclusions regarding the Band.

We really are all different, on different days, and at different times of the day.

Our self-regulation mechanisms are complex and very interesting. Try Guyton's Physiology textbooks to gain a further look at what a complex question you have asked.

Short answer, 'whatever you think today, will be changing before long' as you further adapt to the postBand Life.

Cheers on your journey.

lap1, I don't know. I do know it's a 14 CC band but my doctor nor I have ever tracked how many CC's are in the band. I've never been interested in knowing the amount as long as the amount that is in there is allowing the band to work it's magic.

2muchfun, Thanks... I am just waiting for restriction.. And with 5cc's in my band you would think I would already feel that... Just don't want to stretch my pouch out.. It takes a lot to feel me up and then I am Hungary again after 2-3 hours!!!

I'm going in for a fill in a few days. I can eat Breakfast, eat rice and bread, I don't even feel the band unless I've eaten way too much and it kicks back. I can't go 3 - 4 hours without hunger right now. And I'm asking for 0.25cc.

If you're close, or think you're close, go slow. It doesn't hurt to go slow. In fact if you get too filled and overtight, you actually reverse all the good work by causing your stoma to swell and cause discomfort. I got a 1cc fill and was throwing up Water. I had it taken out and have since had 5 x 0.25cc fills with no issue, and I need another.

If you feel like another might be in order, take it really easy, especially if you think you're close.

I agree with prior posts, this is your journey what works for one, will not work for others, the highest Ive ever had in my band was 3.5 but because of tightness if chest I had it removed, twice! I build it up get to 2.5 and have to undo , so I know I shouldn't have more than that amount. Are you sure its not bored eating, are you drinking Water before you eat, as mudane and boring as it gets , its something we must do to keep our lapbands happy. I speak from personal experience, I start getting cocky and eating things I know I should but because it goes down ok, I'll do it again and again. I'm now suffering from a sore tummy. It feels like I ate something that rubbed the inside of my stomach. Its back to small bites, liquids, and soft foods, until I get it back feeling ok. And then I stress about stressing, sometimes its a vicious cycle, but this is what we signed up for. I wish you the best of luck!

lap1.....How many CCs in your band has little to do with restriction. Your personal anatomy, the thickness of your stomach lining and where the surgeon placed the band make the biggest difference. Many people go right up to the 14 CC limit before they feel restriction.

Stretching your pouch should be incredibly painful unless you're impervious to pain? I did not feel any real restriction till my 3rd fill and I didn't find the green zone till fill #6 and I believe my experience is quite normal.

To stretch your pouch you would have to fill it up(about 2 bites) and not have the food pass through the stoma. It would backup into your esophagus and then you would slime and experience a lot of discomfort. It would take months of this to cause a dilation of your pouch or esophagus.

I don't have anything to add, but if you feel that you would be happier with .25 cc added to the fill, then try it. My surgeon's office will unfill within a week for no cost, if you are too tight. I am not sure how others are. Best wishes.karen..aka.kll724

PS(yes, try to stay away from ER's).

Thanks very much, folks! I guess I'm going to stay where I'm at. I can always add more later. For now I'm doing ok. I agree about preferring being looser than tighter. No fun there.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
