Developing acid reflux after VSG

Recommended Posts

I didn't have any reflux issues prior to surgery. About 2 weeks post op I began having it and I now have to take 30mg of Prilosec daily. My doc told that it will probably resolve within 2 months.

I was taking Nexium for years before my sleeve for GERD. Dr fixed my Hiatal Hernia and told me the Nexium would probably not be necessary - but now I am taking Dexilant and Nexium, + tums and gaviscon for burning esophagus and throat a -- and I have had multiple aspiration pneumonias (hospitalizations), cases of pneumonitis, nodules on mu vocal cords from acid reflux, erosive esophagitis, and am taking my meds dilligently and sleeping upright in a chair! Go figure - it just keeps getting worse - like the body makes the same amount of acid in an "itty bitty space." If any of you hear of other cases of aspiration pneumonia following Vertical Sleeve, please contact me. I am desperate to learn. My surgeon acts like he never heard of it before. My stomach dr acts like the vertical sleeve is some not something he is familiar with. My family doctor is working hard on it and is concerned but unfamiliar. Not much in the literature since using the sleeve as a one part procedure is new.

Did the nexium not work or were you taken off of it? Did you ever take anything else for this? What did your surgeon do for these things before u ever progressed to getting pneumonia? This is scary?

If asking me, the nexium was a wonder drug until after my procedure. Now I take 2 of the strongest ones on the market but am getting worse.

Thanks Erica. I have been almost 9 months out.

Also - I feel like such a nut - Trying to update my ticker since I last updated it in Feb.

Thank you for posting. I never had reflux or gerd prior to surgery. I am almost 5 months post op. Lately I've been waking up choking on acid. Last night it was so bad it went into my nose. It burns so bad, I'm afraid to clear my throat. When it was in my nose I thought it was bleeding.

I almost afraid to go to sleep; as it only happens when I sleep.

I am only 3 months post op and NEVER had acid reflux prior to my sleeve. It seems that I got it immediately following surgery before I could even have food. My issues are pain and burning in my chest. Also, have very bitter taste in my mouth. I was placed on the highest dose of Dexilant and that does nothing for me - almost like I'm not taking anything. My surgeon did place me on Reglan however my primary dr highly recommend that I not take that drug so I am back to only the Dexilant.

My other issue is that when I try to eat, I can't even get past the pain in my chest to attempt to get or fill full so I'm not able to eat much at all.. Anyone else have that issue?

My reflux has been so painful over the weekend I plan on calling my Dr first thing in the morning.

I was on Nexium for years before surgery and was told by my doctor that my GERD might actually get worse following my sleeve surgery. I still take my 1 Nexium a day and it seems to be doing the trick for me so far.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
