Hi everyone,

I just had a question that you guys may know the answer to. Or maybe someone is dealing with this too?

I was sleeved 11/30. My surgery went great and I am losing weight well. However, on Monday I ate a piece of soft tofu and steamed broccoli. (I have been eating soft foods since week 3- per my Surgeons orders.) 10 minutes later, I had severe abdominal pain that radiated to my back. I vomited just a little and had to go to the ER. The pain went away after 40 minutes. Had a CT and labs done. Everything was normal. No gallstones, no leak, no elected liver enzymes. Potassium was a little low. The doctors just called it gastritis. I saw my surgeon the day after and he said it was very hard to get gastritis while taking nexium or any PPI. Got an ultrasound done which really didn't show anything.

So since then, I've been eating fine (miso Soup, soft seafood, Protein shakes, yogurt, light cheese). Until today... I had 1 scrambled egg (which I usually eat). 10 minutes later, I had the same attack. Severe pain, nausea... No vomiting though. The pain went away within 15 minutes.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? My sleeve is great, no leak, healed staple line. Gallbladder is fine- no stones. And each time this happened, I did not overeat.

I really wish I could help, but sorry I cannot. The only thing I suggest is to get a hold of your Bariatric team again. They need to know so they can look further. Good luck and keep the faith.

i have seen this issue mentioned before but I dont have the time this exact moment to search for it out here. I do know I experience the same thing RARELY. What I associate it wth is the food and possibly eating to fast and not chewing well enough.. I think this has happened twice.. I do occasionally feel the pains after eating but based on the research and comments out here I believe it is sort of gastric related. Especially since you have had everything checked.. I would not eat the things that made you feel this way for a while. Perhaps wait another 3 - 4 weeks before you try eggs. It is weird but I do not enjoy eggs like I once did. My tummy feels different after I eat them but it has gotten better with time. I am about 13wks post op now..

I've had the exact same feeling.... It's horrid! What happened to me was the food was stuck. I either ate too fast, or didn't chew it enough, or the food was too sticky. I'm three years post op and to this day I have no desire for rice!

My doctor said a couple sips of soda might help (and I utilize this trick even now). I take a couple sips, get up and moving around,.stretch out my rib cage, and the carbonation of the soda helps the foods get "unstuck". Even after all these years, once in a while I get that delayed (like 15 min after) overly full feeling and it's awful. It feels like nothing will move.... And my heart starts pounding.....And with the nausea the last thing I want to do is sip soda, but it truly helps me.

Otherwise, I simply CANNOT drink anything with meals because it will make me sick.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm thinking it might be my gallbladder. My gallbladder was a little distended. Saw my surgeon and I'm seeing my PCP on Monday.

Have a HIDA scan done. If your ejection fraction is low and the pain is reproduced with Kinevac, which is administered during the HIDA scan, you could have cholecystitis. You can have this with or without gallstones. I've heard it is extremely painful. ???? Good luck!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
