Shellz, that certainly sounded smooth for you. I haven't heard about swallow test. Please elaborate.... Thanks

It is to check if there is a leak in your sleeve. I had to drink a whole cup (in mouthfuls, then swallow) this terrible licorice thick Syrup taste and then a type of X-ray is taken. Took about 30 minutes and thought I was going to pass out after standing and doing the X-rays then had to lie down with a stomach full of this liquid, I struggled to keep it down. I literally felt sick for a few hours after. :(

Just curious how you all decided on a sleeve? I am surprised more people don't opt for it. Reasons seem obvious to me.

Hi Kelliv

I was scheduled to get the band a few years ago with my same surgeon but last minute cancelled for a family emergency. Anyway last year I started researching again and came across the sleeve and knew immediately this was right for me. I did not flinch that this was permanent, I wanted a permanent solution and it just made sense. I am glad with my decision especially when you hear that many get debanded and go for the sleeve. I went straight back to my surgeon and said this is what I wanted and he said a great choice.

Thanks for sharing your story shellz I hadn't thought of surgery until about 6 weeks ago when my sleep specialist suggested it. I immediately started researching and met with surgeon, dietician and Phychologist fairly soon after. Doc said he was happy to do either band or sleeve on me, but I was already 95% convinced on sleeve. Wen dietician and GP told me it would be their choice too, that clinched it for me. Looking for a permanent tool, so reversibility not an issue for me. Also didn't want a foreign object inside me for life with the various complications that go with bands. Very confident with my decision.

I was at the Wesley from Friday morning - wheeled into theatre at 2.30pm and awoke in recovery about 5pm.

The next day Saturday did my swallow test which was horrific and my worst experience of the whole op. anyway all was good and allowed home Sunday morning. Have had a very positive experience.

Thank fully I did not have to endure the swallow test. My doctor did have me on nil by mouth for 48 hours tho. Then onto Clear liquids, still in the hospital.

I chose the sleeve for a number of reason (even tho the band was the first thing i considered), mainly as I didnt want the constant filling/refilling of the band, having an object in me, and the failure rate of the band and the ability to eat meat. The sleeve really is a set and forget, i can eat anything my body can tolerate.

I also chose the sleeve because I wanted something permanent. I had the surgery on July 11 and it's been okay. I get these searing burning pains on my left side when I do some activity. I also get depressed somedays. Does anyone know what that's about?

Apparently it is common to suffer from some depression after surgery. Most people will also have the thoughts of what the heck have I done. Thankfully I didnt so I am not sure what I can say to help, other than speak to your doctor, they may be able to help with it. I did suffer from alot of fatigue early on, and allowed myself the time to sleep if that is what I needed. Also getting active helped me alot with feeling better and recovery, just walking early on.

Kayargh' date=' how much did you get back?[/quote']

Sorry kelliv, I have not been sleeved as yet. That was the qoite at Pindara hospital and they stated I would get around $250 back. But I'm not getting slewed on te Coast, going to Brisbane to have it done in a public hospital...will save around $5000!

July 11 hasn't been that long ago. The little cuts in our abdomen lead to larger cuts in our muscle wall that are still healing, take it easy on yourself :)

It's according to what you mean by depressed? It's normal to feel lethargic and to go thru some buyers regret, to be sad that you can't comfort yourself with food (if that was an issue before) if you are having depressed episodes that involve thoughts of harming yourself or others, best to talk to someone.

I think keeping an open line of communication with a support person and your surgeons office (psycholgist) should help manage all the negative feelings that can come when we are expecting cloud 9 and get post op instead!

Hey kell,

Dietician at hospital gave me heads up on a pharmacy product by nestle called resource Protein. I liked the coffee one.

She reckon although opti is good on pre op, post op not until mushy stage. She said it has something in it to expand and make you feel full, which doesn't help after surgery, u need all the room you can get.

Other than the regular shakes, resource has a juice version. I didn't get any and could have kicked myself as I got very sick of the thick consistency of the shakes!

If you look in the grocery store near Ice cream cones, there are room temp icy poles that are no sugar added or sugar free. Pop some in the freezer! They count as Water and feel good going down!

Good luck with it all! xx

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
