Recommended Posts

That's wonderful news, J!! I've heard from many on here that the first month can be "fraught with peril." Then suddenly it gets better. Yay for you!!

GREAT NEWS!!!!! ive been eating & i feel so much better. i snack all day & it keeps the gas gone & i have so much more energy! THANK GOD!!!!! i went from about 10 gas x chewables a day to 2 a day! im not 100% but im a lot better than before.

im not dehydrated as i stated before so the IV is not necessary & i went to see my nurse practioner on thursday & she thinks im doing great!!!

I agree with your surgeon, you do sound dehydrated, I speak from experience. Girl, I went through so much of what you are going through right after my surgery. I ended up in the hospital three times due to severe dehydration and had to get fluids via IV. As soon as those fluids were in me, I was amazed at how much better I felt. Additionally, the dehydration caused me bladder and kidney infections, which I wasn't even really aware I had until I was tested. All of those things can just really wear you down. I would feel so lightheaded and dizzy, like I was going to pass out at any moment.

If you can't get more fluids in your body, then I suggest going to the emergency room and getting IV fluids. Your health is too important to mess around with. And, as I did, you may have additional infections as a result of the dehydration.

I had a very similar experience... I got very dehydrated and got a bladder infection that turned into a kidney infection. It was only after I absolutely DEDICATED myself to hydration that I started feeling better and made the turn. My husband reminded me just the other day that after the surgery I had regrets too. I'm so far removed from it now I barely remember that because I'm so dang happy now!

HY.DRATE. I sipped and sipped Gatorade (which I did not care for, but knew it had to happen) and I ate a ton of sugar-free popsicles, which I did like and was able to get down. Take your time... no need to try and drink a bunch at once. Take one sip. Wait. Sip again. Wait. Etc....

My aversion to Protein shakes has already been explored here. I'm sorry you're having trouble with food right now but it will come, I promise. In the meantime you should focus 100% on fluids. Best of luck and good wishes for you!

i dont have diabetes & im not on pain meds anymore. i also noticed that at night, im constantly waking up during the night. i never sleep straight thru anymore.

I have a problem-free surgery and recovery. BUT, I didn't sleep through the night for probably 3 months. And now (ten + months out) I still get up once or twice a night to go to the bathroom (I really push fluids). Don't know what disturbed my sleep - thought it was either the anasthesia or having to change the position I slept in from pre surgery to post surgery. But - it is definately worth it - I love my sleeve!

:seeya: hi jasleeve,

you actually brought a tear to my eye. I'm so happy that you are feeling a little better, that things are starting to turn around, but don't overdue now :hand4:

You've been going through so much, i know your mom is there, but i'm sure you wish you had some more support from your "friends"

well, guess what lady, you have all the support in the world from all of us on the board.

We hear all your trials and tribulations - and worry about you. Continue to care of yourself, but now don't all of a sudden overdue.

best wishes

your sleeve family

I am glad you are feeling better. I could never really tolerate Protein Shakes either, so know how hard it can be to get in the Protein. I hope things continue to get better! :rose:

This sounds like a true case of buyers remorse. I had the same thing starting about week 2 and it lasted until about week 6. I am now 5 months post op and I am really very happy I did the surgery now. It is hard to see the silver lining when you are in the middle of the miserable stage, but you will get there. I have lost more than 100 pounds now and I feel so much better with everything that I do. I am a different person now, and I love the new me! I really hope you feel better soon! I know that once you get to the other side of recovery from this major surgery you will be so happy that you did this for yourself! Hang in there!!!! ((hugs))

I had my surgery on Dec 21...i am having the same burping experience as you, i can't even drink Water without burping for what seems like hours...Im having a hard time getting enough Fluid in I know and I too am feeling exhasted most of the time with back pain and headaches...however I just had major surgery about 3 weeks ago and I know that it will get better with time...maybe you should add vit D to your diet I have been taking the Vid D and B12 for about 4 months befor surgery and it helped with my energy levels...hang in there, i will too...

i hated all the shakes but i finally found an unflavored 100% whey Protein -brand JARROW at my healthfood store...1 scoop is 18 grams of protine mixed with 1/2 cup greek yogurt 12.5 grams of protien, splash or two of non fat milk, 1/2 a bannana and a couple of splashes of the Torani sugar free vanilla flavoring syrup...omg it's so good and its about 31 grams of protine which is the same as the premixed drinks i was having before surgery...I bought some other frozen fruit to try with it too...

I just had my 3 week post op and they said Im doing fine and all the feelings im having a normal...i know it's hard but nobody said it would be easy and I just know i'll get through this and be happy on the other side.

I have only lost about 16lbs since surgery but hay, I couldn't loose 16 lbs to save my life before surgery so I know i made the right choice.

Tesse

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
